  1. I am at a national tournament and many judges voted for the other team because of their preferences and biases, however, I'm not complaining. One judge said that she voted Affirmative even though they dropped and conceded and didn't explain many arguments, and my coach said that coming out of the last rebuttal we need to articulate why the judge should vote for us. Can you please help me formulate an overview of why I, as the Affirmative, would win using my advantages? I will give credit where it is due, thank you! I'm running the Dream Act

    How can I improve?

    I started debating summer of 2018 and I only participated in one rookie and novice debate. However, due to the lack of varsity debaters on our school team and my current (and far more experienced) varsity partner's wishes of going to NAUDL, I was moved up to varsity off of 2 official debate league tournaments and one JV summer camp tournament. In December, I went to our debate league's fall championship, and I felt utterly useless because I didn't know how to properly flow, spread, understand spreading, do analytics, or answer cross x questions. I just kind of felt like dead weight for my partner -- I was only there to read cards so that she could prep during my speeches. My rebuttals were also utter garbage and at one point I needed my partner to type what I had to say on a google doc. How can I improve? I really want to do better but I don't even know how to spread or terms related to different AFFs. I'd really appreciate as much help as I can get, thank you!

I'm a sophomore, this will be my second year, however, my previous partner dropped, and I found a partner, who will be a junior next year. with that being said, I'd really like them to have a pretty decent head start next season, so I'd like to start prepping them over the summer. where do I start?? my biggest concern is spreading it too thick and too quickly, overwhelming them.

    Need explanation on simple things

    Im doing policy for the first time next year- and despite all my reading- I don't get inherency that much. Why do I need to show why the policy has some kind of barrier? And, why do I need to show why it wouldn't be passed now? I also am confused on what "Scenarios" are- I've seen them in some cases and I'm wondering what they mean (I understand advantages but not scenarios). For the neg I have a specific question- for counterplans can your actor be different? Like instead of the U.S increasing engagement, could I argue that maybe Mexico should? Also a broader question- im scared ill face cases I have nothing prepped for/no idea how to respond to. How would I deal with this? Sorry for the novicey questions, and thanks!
  7. Hello Cross-X forum friends, my partner and I have been debate nomads at our school for a bit, and this week we've been drafted to cover for our school's only policy debate team. We're not competing too seriously, of course, but we're looking not to make a fool out of ourselves or our school. The team we're filling in for and googling/lurking has taught us the basics of the order and a lot of the vocabulary - and we think we have a good grasp of that stuff, as we've observed a couple rounds of Policy before. We have no specific policy debate coach and our school wide coach tends to focus on LD debaters - basically we're coachless and mentor-less. Left out to dry. So, I've decided to come to what seems to be a pretty active cross-x forum to ask the noble denizens what case(s) I should run and a counterplan I can run in order to not make a mess of the debate round we're going to stand in for next weekend. Our school provided us with "squirrel killers" which appear to amount to scattered evidence and a lot of "on-case" negative cards. We've become familiar with Openevidence which seems to provide a multitude of cases we could run and a wide array of negative cards against given cases that we can use when it comes to debate day - but we have no idea which ones would be best for complete newbies like ourselves to run. In addition, I've run into a bunch of "K" cases and counterplans and such on Openevidence that I can't make heads or tails of. They reference a lot of specific philosophers I've never studied before and I can't exactly see how they win debates? I'd love explanations of "K" arguments I'd probably run into because I don't really understand how to debate against that. Having mostly debated parli in the past - it's usually data vs data but "K"'s seem out of my league. Any resources or guides for newbies would be appreciated. Basically - huge noob, what case/counterplan should I run? Thanks for helping me out, I'll tell you guys how it goes after the tournament if you're interested!
  8. Last weekend I went to my 2nd tournament. (First novice tournament, I went to my first tournament open). My partner and I got 3rd place. We won our first four rounds easily, but the 5th round was a little more difficult. To add on to our arguments, I decided to run a conditional counterplan. I explained to the judge and opposing team how a counterplan worked as did my partner at the beginning of every one of our speeches. (Long explanation first speech, couple sentences every speech after). I thought we had it in the bag. Then I shook the affirmative team's hand and went to go shake the hand of the judge. He said to me "This was my first time judging and I really didn't know what was going on." At that point my heart sank. We ended up losing the round. He put two reason on the ballot. a) Because in their last rebuttal, the aff team said that our counterplan wasn't a legitimate counterplan because it was nontopical and because of an argument about China (which was a new argument that they brought up in their last rebuttal). I really enjoy kritiks and counterplans. I have been told numerous times by my debate coach to never run a kritik in a novice tournament. She also told me if I ran a counterplan I would have to explain it in a way that would make sense to the judge. Basically, my question is this: Is there anyway I can run a kritik or counterplan at a novice tournament that would make sense to a lay judge? (College judges are a little different). Also, would a judge find it offensive if I asked them their paradigm or if they liked kritiks/counterplans? I ask this question because one of our teams at that tournament because a judge felt insulted by them.

    Where can I learn more about spikes?

    My understanding of spikes is that they're put in a case as mines that get triggered if the opponent runs a certain argument. But... that's as much as I understand. Could someone help me better understand what spikes are? Specifically: 1. How do you write a spike? What are the elements of a spike? 2. What happens if a spike gets triggered? 3. What is the theory behind spikes? Why should the consequences of triggering a spike be so serious -- why should the debater writing the spike get to decide what happens to his/her opponent just because they triggered the spike? 4. Where do spikes go in the case? 5. How do you deal with spikes? Thanks so much!

    Theory Spikes Help

    I have a pretty abusive aff (polls), and I haven't lost a single round with it so far in novice but I'm going varsity soon at a tournament and I figured I need to prepare for theory being read against it. I have a drop args on T/theory spike already (see below) and I was wondering what I can do to pre-empt theory. I quite literally learned theory yesterday (I knew the basics before that, but I actually legitamately learned it yesterday). First piece of theory I've ever written: Drop the arg on theory and T because the timeskew in the 1AR makes it impossible for me to cover both theory/T and substance, its key to fairness since substance is the only way for me to win this debate. It’s unreciprocal and unfair if the neg can win the round by mooting my only advocacy with theory/T or on any of their advocacies. Even if I’m being unfair, the fact that I can’t fully cover in the 1AR the multiple independent places the neg could have for you to vote outweighs any advantage I may or may not have. I do LD by the way.
  12. I've been worried about my upcoming part in a debate, specifically Cross-X. The topic in title is - Resvoled: In the United States criminal justice system, truth seeking ought to take precedence over attorney client privilege. We're the negative. I can honestly find no evidence that would be able to be used for us that suggests the right to counsel is flawed, and what I can find seems to be the ramblings of sovereign citizens thinking they've found out why every lawyer ever is a liar. I have no idea how to Cross-X for this kind of topic though, what kind of questions should I be asking, and what flaws should I be looking for in my opponent's constructive? Thanks guys (and gals)!

    Help , 1st year LDer

    I'm a first year LD debater, going to CLD/VLD in three weeks. CPs, Disads, and Ks, are to be expected at this tournament. We haven't learned how to write nor answer any of these. Not looking to write any currently but I have no clue how to answer them. Or what to expect with them. I'm really freaking out for this tournament.. Any help appreciated.
  15. So I'm a bit new to policy debate and my partner and I are thinking of running a Thera poetry (Bifo Semiocap) K aff that we have been working on. We have the shell done, but what does the block file look like. What extensions do we need, what do we need to prep to hit? I think the biggest worry is we don't know what framework args we are going to hit and how to respond to them. Any and all tips would be greatly appreciated!

    How to get around the BIT?

    So, I want to make an economic aff that argues we need to increase and reform our current business plan with China. However, the BIT essentially does this anyways- and its supposed to be "in thew works/close to passing." Is there any way aorund this? Maybe my aff extends the bit? Encourages the bit? reforms the bit?

    Capitalism Kritic Lesson

    Hello, Cross-X. I am wanting to try some minor K debate so that I can have a better understanding of what I will be facing at Nat Quals. I was directed at either learning Anthro or Cap, so I choose Cap 'cause Anthro is really generic and not very strong in round. Simply put, my partner would waste his breath in the 1NC and the K wouldn't make it past the 2NC. However, I am pretty new to CX, and don't completely understand how a K functions in round. So, my question is how do you correctly run a K and where do I need to go to get more understanding on Cap Bad. Any additional info would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

    LDer doing policy at districts

    I'm a novice LD debater this year and have a significantly better chance of doing well at districts in policy rather than LD (trust me, I don't really need to worry about the experience gap in my state). I know a lot about policy through what applies from LD and I also competed in policy at an earlier tournament. So, I was just curious as to what arguments have been the most prominent with the current HS resolution that I should prepare to see. Also, are there any rounds with good sound quality online that I could use for flowing practice?

    Novice Finals...Novice Maverick...

    Hey, all! So I'm a novice...a policy novice...whoop. Saturday we had a debate tournament. It was my team's first time breaking, and we made it past semi-finals, to finals! My partner didn't think we would break, so they were already set to leave before semi's. My partner got permission from their parents to stay one more round, but REALLY needed to leave after that. They convinced me it was fine, though, because we wouldn't make it to finals anyway. You know where this is going...we made it to finals. So not only was it my first time mavericking, but it was also my first time in finals...yay. It ended up going really well, though. I went against a team known for making their opponents cry during cross-ex, so I actually feel like it went well! My 2AR was probably the best I've ever given (I usually give that speech, anyway) and all of the viewers said I won. I was able to prove that there was no link to their disadvantage or counterplan, and won on topicality for both. Which, brings me to the point of this insanely long post...can I still win a finals round if I maverick? Because my team (ME) ended up taking second, but most people thought I should have won. One of my judges shook my hand after awards and said "I'm sorry. You would have won, but..." in reference to my lack of a partner. Is this debate-legal, to make someone lose strictly because they mavericked?

    If there are any true novices out there that want to do a virtual debate, I'm game. I'm a novice and I'd like to debate someone around my level, so if anyone wants to debate, just let me know (I'll go either aff or neg, your pick).     I feel like this will have the same advantages as the standard offshore drilling aff but it (sort of) solves for global warming instead of making it worse. Its easy to find lit for it but i feel like its easy to write a cp against it...

    need a good alt card

    My alt is essentially an argument that the opponent is engaging in a bad act, and we need to do "X," I know its pretty straightforward, but I know people who add more nuance to this form of a K. Ive heard of justifications for why it needs to start in round, or maybe some ROB argument. Anyone have any ideas or braod cards that go with this type of alt?
  23. Hello everyone! I'm new to this forum and I'm doing a presentation on the strategic application of accelerationism as a K. However, I'm very confused on the parts of the K and just the debate strategy in general. I'm kind of unclear on the four parts. Our novice teams are only running one K, and that's the cap k. Most of my knowledge is based on that (and a couple other varsity K rounds I flowed). My current understanding of accelerationism is mostly based on the accelerationist manifesto, and it's that capitalism should be accelerated for the late benefits of technological evolution in order to create a future for a world threatened by the deterimental effects of capitalism, such as climate change and governmental problems. I think I understand the philosophy but I have no idea how it's run as a K. So here goes: 1. Link In the cap k the aff links to capitalism which links to the impacts by supporting capitalist ideas, for example trade. However, accelerationism is about accelerating capitalism for the late BENEFITS. Isn't this good? Does that mean affs who don't support accelerationism are bad because they doom the world by not creating a new future? Idk. 2. Impact The impact is good, right? Technological evolution to save a future. I don't really understand this part because the impact should be the undesirable effects. 3. Alternative I guess this part is pretty clear, that the alternative is to accelerate capitalism in order to technologically evolve and save a world in danger. 4. Framework Framework is how the judge should evaluate the round in my understanding, so in this case a possible fw could be the judge should vote for the team that creates a world post-capitalism. This is all my understanding of accelerationism thus far. We aren't expected to run it or master it, but have a general understanding. It would be greatly GREATLY appreciated if someone could look over and help me in understanding the link and impact! Thank you very much!

  25. I know novices will do things like spread, run CPs and DAs, but are there any other kinds of advanced arguments novice LDers will run? Ks, plans, theory spikes (one time my friend gave a novice a 17 for running a theory shell against a kid who was absolutely clueless), ROTB/J, T, skep, etc? Although I've never seen or heard of novices running these things (although apparently the novice who won Big Lex ran a "K"), I don't see why they don't use little things like presumption, its not that hard to understand. Also, I'm talking about the national circuit mainly.
