    Texas Teams?

Just wondering about the thoughts on these after Grapevine and based off of last year: 1. Top 10 Texas teams in order? 2. Best Texas senior team? 3. Best Texas junior team? 4. Best Texas sophomore team?

  4. Hey everyone! In light of recent problems with cross-x, I think it's time we look at some alternatives. I think that there are a lot of valuable resources here, and we need to find a way to preserve that. With that in mind, I think that shifting sites would be good. I don't know how well this is known but there is a debate discord server, currently standing at 1500+ members. There we have multiple people (myself included) frequently judging debates and giving advice, including some college debaters and coaches. There are a few key benefits to switching, some of them related to Vdebates, which is why I put this here. 1) Site stability- The discord server is not only stable, but it's growing, which I think is important to consider. There are no upload issues, or worries of it going down anytime soon. 2) User friendlyness/activity- The structure of Discord makes the server much much easier to use. You can easily set up group chats and discussions, and it has a much cleaner interface that is better able to accommodate new users. Due to this, there's a large degree of activity, for the ODT a lot of the participants are active on the server. 3) Vdebate 2.0- The discord server has voice servers, which allows actual rounds, real spreading, and real debates. We often even have enough judges to have panels, and are able to give extended oral RFD's and advice. This would allow for Vdebate to take off on a whole new level, instead of just typing, we could move to real rounds that are better practice for real tournaments. 4) Resources- The server often finds books and literature we have hard times finding, including stuff not always found on scihub or libgen. All in all, I don't run the server, but I've found a welcoming home there, and I've been able to debate and judge there for quite some time. I think that beginning to shift there would allow for better vdebates, and ultimately, the resources and activity there make it a better resource than cross x. We could also begin transferring some of the old explanations there, and beginning to file them. The invite link is: debate.carro.cat It redirects to the discord invite, feel free to join. I hope to see you all there. Feel free to message me on here if you have any questions or concerns.

Be a part new debate documentary!

Hi, this is the director and producer of the film We Affirm! We Affirm is a new and upcoming documentary about the world of high school debate. We created this film with the intention to educate those not in the debate community about what exactly it is that we do and why we are so passionate about it. We also want this to be a film for debaters by debaters, which is where you guys come in! We want to be able to have debaters from all across the nation and globe to a part of this film. One of the biggest aspects of this film is focusing on the voice of debaters and letting them share how debate has affected their lives. If you would like to be a part of this, then just create a video and send it to weaffirmdoc@gmail.com . The video does not have to be anything fancy and can really just be shot on your webcam. All you need to do is say your name and where you are from and then answer the following questions: Why did you join debate? After joining, why have you chosen to stick around? How has debate impacted or changed your life? We look forward to working with all of you and hope to hear back from you all soon! If you would like to learn more about us you can check out our Indie Go Go page, too. igg.me/at/we-affirm-debate-documentary

Hello, my name is Allen Easley, and I suck at my 2N overviews. I find them being ineffective and a time suck to my speech. If you have any general tip for the construct of my overviews that would be fantabular. Also, If you have any general tips that would be radical. Thanks y'all. *Notice the non-gendered usage of y'all? Yep, I am not sexist at all.

  10. I need some help figuring out a constitutional framework. Essentially I am trying to flesh out the idea that constituionalsm is a pre-req to morality- at least when the discourse is about rights in america- because when examining the "right and legality" in america, it goes back the constitution. I have heard of other frameworks, I am just trying to figure out how the framework works, and what I would need to argue
  11. Binghamton University has announced its 2nd annual online debate tournament. All the details, including how to register, can be found on the website at- http://speechdebate.binghamton.edu/Tournaments/7/Home/binghamton-university-s-2nd-annual-online-debate-tournament/ Last year the tournament featured 100 competitors from around the United States in both high school and college. This year entries are open to any enrolled high school or undergraduate in the world. Prizes include Amazon gift cards, books, hoodies, t-shirts, and more. Saying "Ontology" or "Epistemology"

Sooooo, in policy debate, much like in IRL, most people are sycophants and will imitate whatever other people do. Because of this, absurd social norms can develop over time: like ass-to-mouth or Capitalism. In policy debate one such absurd social norm is misusing the words "ontology" or "epistemology". I do not think many on this site have done this, but in debate rounds its rampant. It doesn't bother me, because I get what you "meant to say", but saying words correctly is important I feel like. To place them in to your context properly so that those concepts contain similar relational metaphors as the connections between those concepts in other people's contexts. Would be the closest to a definition of "interpersonal intelligence" as one can get. What does it look like? "Reject them because of their epistemology" What should it look like? "Reject them because they have bad epistemological foundations" or "Reject them because they re-ingrain a faulty episteme" Why? Because -logy means "study of"!!!!!!!!!! Or "Science of" depending on who you ask, because the word is clearly coming from "logos". So "Epistemology" translates as "study of knowing" or maybe "study of knowledge". So... When you say "reject them because of their epistemology" that translates to "reject them because of their study of knowing" They didn't engage in a study of knowing. YOU are the only one engaging in a "study of knowing" by making problematic the epistemological stance of the aff. Did that all make sense?

    Debate Synergy Program File

So, I've been out of debate for a while now, but I've been using Debate Synergy in college since it's really good for organizing my notes. Problem is, my old laptop that had debate synergy has recently broken and after trying to find debate synergy for my new laptop, I either find it on exclusive membership wikis, the web app, or phishing/virus sites. If anyone could provide the file or give a link leading to a valid download link that would be great. I'm looking for the debate synergy with the toolbar at the top of MS Word. Thank you.

How to Write an amazing K

So, I've been working on writing a K for a couple months now for next year. I already have the basic stuff that makes it a runnable K, a good 1NC Shell, basic AT and AT Perms, a handy-dandy framework, and block extensions. This is good, but what can I do to make it great?

    A call to Coaches

My most recent Saturday tournament (Varsity CX at Paris North Lamar in East Texas) consisted of three debates in which neither competitors nor judges knew exactly what was going on. Why? Because every team I competed against read a complicated advocacy of which they could not explain paired with a RoB (Roll of the Ballot) framed specifically around their advocacy. The case debate was non-existent. My case was freaking drones. Now what is the problem with this? Its bad debate! If you can even call it debate. After one such round, I talked with my opponents. They told me they had been doing debate for three years (both were juniors) and that they did not understand what they had read- a psychoanalysis K. Confused, I asked why they had decided to run thee K, to which one replied "My coach said it would win, he talks about this type of stuff all the time but it goes a bit over our heads". And here we find the fault. Psychoanalysis is a complicated critical theory that is hard to grasp for even the most educated political scientists, philosophers, and physicians. So why, may I ask, do we put it in to the hands of high school students to discuss, debate, and overall butcher? My thesis is that winning has overshadowed education in what is supposed to be its one last stronghold. We write blocks and put them in to student's hands so that they win. Why? Why can we not prepare debaters to think? Teach students to respond to arguments in their way, in a logical way that makes sense to them? We must remember that it is our students who are supposed to be learning to form argumentation, not us. It seems that with the "Golden generation" of high school debaters growing up and coaching, they can't let go of the fact that its not about them anymore. This appears to be the case with judges as well. The fad of "doing work" has appeared. Filling gaps in argumentation with a judge's own knowledge or opinions is not the point of debate (YOU WILL ALWAYS BEAT THE CHILD YOU ARE JUDGING, don't worry-we know that. You don't have to prove it), a good educator should judge on whats given to them, no more and no less. Why do we tell our students they can't do something or that they must do something? "You must put uniqueness first in your disadvantage." "You can't run new arguments in the 2NC" "You must spread." "You can't spread" No, your regional biases and trends do not dictate what you MUST do in a debate round. The whole point of debate is to provide a structured round (speech length and order) while not limiting the student's creativity and argumentation i.e. if I can persuade the judge of it then I can do it. There are no rules in debate other than these (provided a few in certain circuits that dictate evidence rules and the like) and that is a good thing. It keeps debate what it is. Coaches and judges alike need to realize, debate is about the students and their education. Winning is a side-effect of good debates.

I got a 1NC K shell based off of Maslow's hierarchy of needs, and discusses how diplomatic endeavors shouldn't be prioritized but rather we can't reach that stage without solving for poverty. Needs extension. Willing to trade for anything to do w/ china.
