    Big Questions 2018-19

My team is doing a big questions tournament for the NSDA grant. The resolution is "Humans are primarily driven by self-interest." I don't typically debate big questions, although I have in the past. I'm curious about what non-typical aff and neg arguments there are? It seems to me that the debate will ultimately be the neg providing examples of good deeds and the aff saying everything is psychologically about self interest. Are there any other ways/ contentions to make the debate interesting?
  3. I am at a national tournament and many judges voted for the other team because of their preferences and biases, however, I'm not complaining. One judge said that she voted Affirmative even though they dropped and conceded and didn't explain many arguments, and my coach said that coming out of the last rebuttal we need to articulate why the judge should vote for us. Can you please help me formulate an overview of why I, as the Affirmative, would win using my advantages? I will give credit where it is due, thank you! I'm running the Dream Act

    Debate Synergy Program File

So, I've been out of debate for a while now, but I've been using Debate Synergy in college since it's really good for organizing my notes. Problem is, my old laptop that had debate synergy has recently broken and after trying to find debate synergy for my new laptop, I either find it on exclusive membership wikis, the web app, or phishing/virus sites. If anyone could provide the file or give a link leading to a valid download link that would be great. I'm looking for the debate synergy with the toolbar at the top of MS Word. Thank you.
  7. My partner and I have been hitting a lot of NAD Bank and just overall Mexico cases. We were wondering if anyone had some DA's or Counterplans that are effective against them. We have a few but need some more to stay competitive. We are willing to do a trade for some of the stuff we have written.
  8. Hey all, when can we do an online tourney? I will start a bracket, PM me if you want to register. - Jake

    Debate Camps (UT?)

Hello everyone! I I signed up for UTNIF in Austin, and was wondering if anyone else was going to this and if they have in past years. If not to UT, then where is everyone else going across the nation? This is my first time attending any debate camp and I was interested in knowing the run down of how they proceed, and what was your experience in one. Thank you! Respectfully, JM

How to Write an amazing K

So, I've been working on writing a K for a couple months now for next year. I already have the basic stuff that makes it a runnable K, a good 1NC Shell, basic AT and AT Perms, a handy-dandy framework, and block extensions. This is good, but what can I do to make it great?

    2 questions for LD

First, I am wondering how the neg would respond to the aff trying to perm the alt? I.E aff runs arguments that very clearly relate to capatalism but perms the alt that socialism is the answer OR, and more to my inquiry, if the neg runs a k on the langauge/framing the aff uses as morally bad and the aff either perms and says "aff will just adopt alt/fix language/paradigm." I see this as kinda unfair bc it isnt like a perm to a cp; it is literally the aff realzing they lost on the k and using their own concession as a way to dismiss the k. Also, can the neg run a ROB in the 1nc? Seems kinda abusive, bc the aff never gets real chance to engage?

  16. So I've been having a lot of... debate... with my family over the activity. I do LD, and love it. I've learned so much from it in the year I've done it - how to research, about current events, and - now that I'm focusing on K debate - critical issues like capitalism, racism, sexism, and homophobia that are all very real in our society. The people in the community are wonderful, and I've made most of my friends through it. However, my parents are less happy about it, and I can see where they're coming from. I think that last year could have gone worse grade-wise (I ended with just one B out of As in my classes), but I was always thinking about debate one way or another, and when I got my laptop, I would do a little Spanish work, switch to Word to work on a spike, do a little English HW, go back to reading Giroux for half an hour. My parents also noticed that I was more stressed out - especially before tournaments. They also start to lose faith in debate as public speaking when they see TOC finals where people are talking at 8453 wpm. I'm taking AP Biology this coming year, along with Honors Chemistry and other Honors courses. I'm a little worried that I might be able to keep up with the curriculum, from what I gather from my textbooks, and I'll definitely have to study the material at home. My family and I had a long discussion, and we came up with a some options: 1. I continue with the activity as before, and may or may not keep up my grades. 2. I stop going to local tourneys. Allows me to still do tech debate, which I love (but my parents hate), but will require a lot of preparation beforehand that might conflict with me studying at home. 3. I quit Forensics entirely. Solves all academic impacts but links to an Extreme Sadness DA. 4. I stay in the Forensics community and do OO or another activity that more visibly perfects public-speaking skills. Maybe I'll go to a local tourney or two for old times' sake. Are there any other alternatives possible in my situation? I really want to debate, but I don't want to sacrifice my grades, for a "game", as much as it hurts to say it. Can someone also hmu with a "benefits of debate" backfile or something because I wanna prep out the usual responses ("tech debate is stupid" "how is radical anarcho-super-destructionist theory going to help you become a doctor" "you haven't become a better speaker, just able to talk really fast and argue with me better")

    Silence debate?

how would a debate play out if the 1ac stands up and says nothing? this happened last year during semis at a tournament in Chicago; the aff said nothing for their 1ac, the neg replied by saying nothing in their 1nc, the aff then read cards in their 2ac saying "silence good," and neg still stayed silent; the 1ar read more silence good cards and the rest of the speeches were silent. the neg won because they were more silent. in the situation above, would the best method of action for the aff be to turn their case and say silence bad? is that even possible? how would you be able to win aff on this strategy? my partner and i are considering this at a scrimmage, but we don't know how we would possibly win with this strategy or what to do if the same situation played out. if we stay silent for the entire debate the judge would vote neg on presumption, right? are there any cards/case files somebody could link me to? we are very interested in this. thanks!

    Anthro Kritik

I'm looking for a Anthro K. I'll trade for one! PM me,
  19. I need some help figuring out a constitutional framework. Essentially I am trying to flesh out the idea that constituionalsm is a pre-req to morality- at least when the discourse is about rights in america- because when examining the "right and legality" in america, it goes back the constitution. I have heard of other frameworks, I am just trying to figure out how the framework works, and what I would need to argue
  20. So im on the waitlist for the Golden Desert Debate Invitational and if i get off of the waiting list i have to supply my own judge. Paper Debating Kritik

I'm looking for a kritik of debating on paper. Something about how using paper instead of a computer kills trees and is bad for biodiversity. Does it even exist? I'll be willing to trade some neolib or Kappeler stuff for it. Thanks in advance.

    Realism Good K

So I'm reading: The Tragedy of Great Power Politics by John Mearsheimer, And I know Realism Good/Inevitable is a popular AFF argument to Security Ks. But I'm wondering if there is a way to make Realism Good a K argument? Any ideas?
  25. Hey The debate team I am on, is going out of state to Springfield in a couple of weeks for the Parkview tournament in Missouri. There will be competitors in LD, PF, CX, and Congress from my school! I was wondering if anyone had any information on what the Missouri circuit was like for those events? What types of arguments are popular for each of those events? Is spreading popular? Is there anything different about those events on the Missouri circuit? Thank you all so much
