  1. How would someone go about finding/writing a K about how the aff team isn't open-minded enough?
  2. So in one of my coaches files he shared with me, there's a very interesting kritik that is meant to be read against affs of personal experience. There is no alternative for it, but it's meant to be read as a case turn. I read it on case against an aff of legalizing undocumented migrants that talked about forced harm and internalized racism. There's only two cards, but in cross-ex, I stumbled a little bit because I didn't quite understand it well enough. My understanding was that the 1AC was simply a forced confession of a story in exchange for the ballot which ultimately trivialized the violence they truly faced. Their answers were that we don't give a sh** about your guilt. The judges said that their answers were good and that we shouldn't be reading those authors if we didn't understand them, but we won on a procedural so it didn't end up mattering. Can someone help explain the argument made by Foucault and Zizek in these cards? I don't want to put the whole thing in the event that someone takes our evidence and I am blamed, but I'll put some excerpts and if anyone could help me understand them, I would greatly appreciate it. First card- Aff is a process of confessional-their demand is an exchange of truth of experience as the price of redemption. Foucault Excerpt 1: The mad would be cured if one managed to show them that their delirium is without any relation to reality. Excerpt 2: Leuret wishes to obtain a precise act the explicit affirmation, “I am mad.” Excerpt 3: To declare aloud and intelligible the truth about oneself – I mean, to confess-has been considered for be a long time in the western world either a condition for redemption for one sins or a essential item in the condemnation of the guilty. Second Card- Their confessional is tantamount to a Stalinist show-trial that locks us all into an unproductive forced choice – their criticism deploys guilt as a means of avoiding a full questioning of privilege. Their argument enforces a kind of metaguilt, implicated by individuals who participate in their own oppression-their project doesn’t allow for the possibility of escape, meaning there is no alternative Zizek Excerpt 1: the subject experiences guilt before the big Other, while anxiety is a sign that the Other itself is lacking, impotent – in short, guilt masks anxiety. Excerpt 2: The more they proclaim their innocence, the more guilty they are!’) therefore contains a grain of truth; the ex-Party cadres wrongfully condemned as ‘traitors’ were guilty in a way, although not, of course, of the crimes of which they were explicitly accused – their true guilt was a kind of metaguilt: that is, it lay in the way they themselves participated in the creation of the system which rejected them Excerpt 3: their condemnation meant that they got from the system their own message in its inverted-true form. Can someone help me understand these cards better? I would really appreciate it, because I think the literature is very interesting but I only understand a small fraction of it. Some key things I don't understand include-"a essential item in the condemnation of the guilty" "Stalinist show-trial" "metaguilt" "their own message in its inverted-true form". Thanks!
  3. Hey everyone, I was wondering if someone could give me a pretty thorough explanation of nietzsche diceroll? I am a little confused by the idea of how a diceroll solves with the whole affirmation of chance, what ressentiment really is, will to power and truth, and also any tips that you have. Are there any tips or important things to know when running nietzsche? I sincerely appreciate any help.
  4. Hi! I've recently finished putting the rough finishes on what I'm calling the "Swearing Kritik". It's partially inspired from @macmc201 and @U_spread_I_extend from this thread: So I wanted to test it out. I called an old buddy of mine and he agreed to have a practice debate with me. Since I haven't been actively debating at public tournaments recently, we've decided to make it a throwback debate. We'll act as if it's May 2017 again. The resolution will be the China topic (a personal favorite of mine) and we'll use evidence that is only from or before May 2017. My friend will be aff, and he'll likely run the Space aff. I'll be neg and run the Swearing K among other things. We'll need several judges for our debate. The debate will start sometime in late February since early February is a busy time for me. It would also be good if you were somewhat familiar with the China topic.
  5. Hey everyone, I would greatly appreciate if everyone could give me an explanation of how to answer Capitalism Good Turns. For example, Cap Solves War, Inequality, Poverty, Space, Racism, Warming. all with cards as to why citing aggregate data or whatever else. They also say that the examples of capitalism our cards mention are all pure capitalism, but the US has nuances and regulations of capitalism. How do you defend against those cap turns and other cap arguments? I feel like when I run cap, its a lost cause. Any tech arguments? Sincerely appreciate anything anyone can offer.
  6. So I run neg against a local team and they always run the perm - methodological pluralism. The specific tag is "Perm – methodological pluralism combines multiple schools of thought to reclaim IR as emancipatory praxis and avoid endless political violence." How do you answer this? Can you say they sever out of advocating for their own plan text? I specifically ran cap and security k against this team, both times losing on this perm. Anything will help!!
  7. Hello folks, When I am running a policy aff, especially a soft left one, how do I answer generic Kritik links like the aff uses USFG or the aff is white saviorism or links from Antiblackness teams that we don't centre our discourse around black people . The way I have been doing in the past is either reading a bunch of state good cards or at least in this topic, say it's negative state action so we are taking power away from the state/ departure from the status quo. Are there any analytical responses or cards/ authors i can cut to answer them? Thanks
  8. I heard about a card by an author named Connolly in an HS Impact podcast, and I've been trying to find the author/article it's from so I can cut it, but I haven't had any luck because it's not on the files I've looked at and there are multiple authors named Connolly who write about the same thing. The card's a defense to set col/antiblackness/any other k that presents a theory of how the world operates by saying (from what I inferred in the podcast) that there are no overarching social theories. Has anyone heard of this card, or can give me the article it comes from? It's possible that it comes from William E. Connolly, but he's published multiple books and I'm not sure which one it would come from.

    Planless Aff?

So, I compete in a primarily stock/comms area and am interested in running a K-Aff. I found one that I like but it doesn't have a plan. I'm sure this is a novice question but how would I go about running a case without a plan? Also, how do I defend T? How does the USFG substantially reduce anything?
  10. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for any obscure kritikal affs, right now I am trying to come up with something along the lines of lgbtq+ migrants.
  11. Hi Everyone! If you've seen much of my content you might know that I am the owner and Director of Debate at the Digital Debate Camp. We are an online camp that aims to replace the pedagogical function of the traditional camp structure by utilizing online education strategies. We function the same as a regular normal camp in theory - there are lectures, practice speeches, and tons of 1-on-1 instruction (but more on that later). While we can't quite recreate the special feeling of a summer immersed in debate surrounded by peers, we also know that access to a traditional camp is often far outside the means of most debaters. Because we can sidestep the fixed costs of housing etc. the Digital Debate Camp is priced at a modest $400. When I was in high school my family couldn't come close to affording a top camp without significant financial aid, and because we heavily privilege accessibility, we maintain an aggressive aid program with an enormous success rate. We don't think we can eclipse the formal camp structure, but we have a lot to offer. Our camp is quite long - we run from June 1st to August 1st. Second, we offer more 1-on-1 instruction than any other camp I know. Our instructors offer dozens of office hours a piece each week, ensuring someone will always be available when you are for practice speeches, argument development, file critique, or whatever else you may want out of an instructor. We instruct LD, PF, and Policy debate. We are also specially attuned to novice debate, from middle school on up. You can find out more at our new, updated website: www.digitaldebatecamp.com If you have any questions, I'd love to take them here, or you can contact me directly through our website. Note to mods: I've paid to advertise on the site every time I've been prompted. The website owner can feel free to take advertising fees for this summer from my residual evazon balance.

  14. Where can I find a file and/or a wiki entry for a forced clash K? I've seen it before run against Riverwood AD this year, but I'm not sure who so I can't find the cites. If anyone knows where I can find it or has backfiles willing to share or trade for it would be greatly appreciated.
  15. Hey Guys, I have a tournament coming up soon where I am running a Bifo K. I would love for some advice from. people who are experienced in this area of lit of postmodernism. If anyone would be able to work with me, I am looking to cut down on highlighting, help answering some on case args, what to prep on top of current block file, and where I should direct the round as the 2AC. PM me if you would be able to help, give advice, or have any questions. Anything would be appreciated! Thanks so much!!!!!
  16. Do y'all have any idea what Kritiks will be good next year? I want to get to know one very well for next year, and I figure that if I start learning and reading now I will be much better off than if I only read over the summer.
  17. Hello everyone, I am thinking of running one-off psychoanalysis at my next tournament. I have some basic knowledge of psychoanalysis from Freud and Lacan. I am just transitioning myself towards high-theory now. Does anyone recommend any literature that I could read in regards to psychoanalysis, especially pertaining to race and identity. I would prefer articles that are in pdf forms so I could also share with my partner. Side note: SInce I am beginning to transition myself, I hope for something that's easier to digest and gradually build my knowledge up. Thank you
  18. Hello! I'd like an explanation of these two concepts and how they relate to Heidegger's concept of dasein, please. I'm reading him rn, and it is a really difficult concept for me to grasp, seeing as for some reason, whenever I look up "temporality vs temporality", literally no website offers a good, concise, definition. (I'm looking for a paraphrase, too. Please don't just respond with Heidegger's definiton of both). Thanks. Edited for language.
  19. This professor has a ton of videos online explaining philosophical concepts/methods: https://www.youtube.com/user/PhilosophicalTechne/videos - including this introduction to Michel Foucault: https://youtu.be/Ua4wrcS9u3A.
  20. Hello, What would the plan text for an Orthodox Marxism PIK look like? Note: I'm not actually going to advocate Marxism as a pragmatic solution, but the alt is to endorse it and create the intellectual opportunity necessary to start a Marxist revolution, not to advocate the revolution itself. I don't know if Marxism is ever run differently, so I just wanted to put that in there.
  21. Hello So as the title suggests, I run kritiks. I know that the alternative is always the weakest part of the kritik and often time is vague. I have been in rounds where the judge voted my team down for going for the kritik in the 2NR, but my mentor also told me to never kick the alt. So under what situation should I kick the alt and let's say go for the link turn? Thank you

  25. how would a debate play out if the 1ac stands up and says nothing? this happened last year during semis at a tournament in Chicago; the aff said nothing for their 1ac, the neg replied by saying nothing in their 1nc, the aff then read cards in their 2ac saying "silence good," and neg still stayed silent; the 1ar read more silence good cards and the rest of the speeches were silent. the neg won because they were more silent. in the situation above, would the best method of action for the aff be to turn their case and say silence bad? is that even possible? how would you be able to win aff on this strategy? my partner and i are considering this at a scrimmage, but we don't know how we would possibly win with this strategy or what to do if the same situation played out. if we stay silent for the entire debate the judge would vote neg on presumption, right? are there any cards/case files somebody could link me to? we are very interested in this. thanks!
