    HUGE Congrats

As probably one of the few that checks this regularly, I will say thank you from everyone on the squad. They have put in a ton of work and as a coach I a super proud of them. So again, thank you for recognizing that hard work. We will take all the support we can get and I always appreciate it. If you want to keep track of the team we have one more major tournament at CAL (15-17 Feb) this year which you can follow on tabroom.com and then the TOC in April. On a side note, I have been a huge supporter of MO debate for, well let's just say a long time lol, and if anyone has questions or needs assistance about trying to travel or get ready for competition, I am willing to give some bits of advice on what you need to do to help prepare. Good luck to everyone in MO as they prepare for State and NFL qualifiers.

    UMKC - College Debate Opportunity

I hope everyone is having a great season so far. I know a lot of people are making decisions about schools, scholarships, and debate opportunities. For those interested in debate, the University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC) has some great opportunities available to those who are interested in continuing their debate careers in college. This is a historically competitive program that provides opportunities for travel and competitive success to students debating at all skill levels. UMKC finished the 2013 season ranked 8th in the country. If you are interested in debating in college, the team has several scholarships available to students. Those interested should visit the teams website (below) and fill out an application or contact the Director of Debate, Matt Vega. I am also willing to answer questions as well, or you can send us a message on the UMKC Facebook page as well. Caselist

Hey KS community. Hope all is well. Do you all have a new caselist this year? I ask because Iowa caucus is here and there is only one school who has disclosed something on the wiki (thank you SME) and the rest have nothing. I know often times KS runs its own wiki so I was wondering if your disclosure information was there? Or if anyone knows what BVN, BVSW, Olathe NW, SMS, or Washburn Rural run I would take that too.

    13-14 Debaters

Barstow has 4 varsity teams and probably 4 novice teams. The novices will be out and about from time to time.

    Preferred Kansas Tournaments

@Lincoln Prep. Remember that as a MO school you have a strict date that you have to adhere to for debating and can't start until the second weekend in October. Get with me on email or chat if you need some assistance navigating the weird world of MSHSAA limitations. The last thing I want is you all to get caught up on some dumb stuff that a little cross-town communication could have prevented. clintjclevenger at gmail dot com

    Camp For A Rising Senior?

Check out the UMKC SDI 4 week lab. http://umkcsdi.com/ It is way under 3K and has a pretty good lab leader combo of Adam Symonds and Malcolm Gordon leading the 4 week lab and the rest of the staff includes the current national champion in both CEDA and the NDT. cjc

    Mo @ Ndca

Barstow sent one team to represent Missouri at the National Debate Coaches Association National Championship this weekend. They lost in the doubles to eventual quarter-finalist Bronx Science. They had a great season, clearing and winning elims at various tournaments including Michigan, Iowa Caucus, Glenbrooks, and Heritage Hall. I know they don't get talked much about herd in these forums because they are not around at other tournaments, so I thought I would let you all know there are still MO teams out there representing well for KC and MO. For all of the talk that goes on in these forums about the state of MO debate and talk of traveling nationally, I would love to see more MO teams out there. The NDCA was approved by the National Association of Principles to be considered a national championship tournament in the same class as NFL and CFL. This might ease the travel restriction (we are checking on that). cjc

    Side Bias: A Closer Look

I began I large study at the begining of the year, compiling data about side biases on teams and AFF/NEG from tournaments. I did not have the time to complete it - it just takes too long and had other things to do. it can be found here - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ArnmVpHzGZKJdEVDRDdTSHVtNHNyc0RWUDEyQWFpb3c#gid=0 I wish I had done this for a larger sample size, but it does include 10 major tournaments including Grapevine, Greenhill, GTown, Wake, St. Marks and Iowa. The result based on that data was that there was no cumulative side bias to be had. The percentages that might favor one team over another are well within the swing margins for the difference to be of no statistical bias. While there might have been some statistical increments that were larger from tournament to tournament, those seemed to be balanced by the season as a whole. In fairness, I have not read all of this thread, but if the question (which it seems to be) is a theory debate about whether the argument of having a side bias is accurate - the reality is that there is not a bias either direction, from tournament to tournament and on the season as a whole. cjc
