Current Trends in American Political "Dialogue"
topspeaker70 posted a topic in Other Forms of Debate
If a picture says a thousand words, here are about a million to define "current trends in American political dialogue." And please note the implication of the last ten seconds for "meaningful democratic deliberation." Good luck at Nationals! http://huffingtonpost.com/2010/05/18/midterm-madness-the-story_n_580194.html -
20, 30, 40, 50 blocks on Foucault, I wanna be debated! I'm always turning impacts, wherever I go I wanna be debated! Hurry, hurry, hurry, My mouth is stuffed with pens, Hurry, hurry, hurry, The research never ends. I don't have time to urinate, So thank God for Depends! Let's go, let's go, let's go, Uh-Oh! (Key Change) 20, 30, 40 thousand bucks of my dough I wanna be debated! I blow on printer cartridges At Office Depot I wanna be debated! My tubs are on the airplane, My briefs are on the floor, I wish I were emulsified, So I could spread some more! I haven't had a shower Since 1994! Just flow, flow, flow, flow, flow Yo, Ho! (Key Change) 20, 40, 60, 80 hours ago I wanna be debated! I think I took a cat nap, I really don't know... I wanna be debated! My teachers cannot stand me Because I'm so unique. My prom date asked me 'bout some head I read (him/her/it/them) a kritik! I must agree with Nietzsche I have to crush the weak! And I ain't waiting fo... Godot! Blah, blah, blah, blah, Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah! I wanna be debated! Blah, blah, blah, blah, Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah! I wanna be debated! Blah, blah, blah, blah Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah! I wanna be debated! Blah, blah, blah, blah, Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah! I WANNA BE DEBATED! Yeah, Zarefsky and Rollins were pretty good, but could they do Ramones covers? Next up - My appeal to thirty-something Lay Judges: "Don't Fear the Briefer." P.S. Now... if we can get some of you "Young 'Uns" to put this to music and pictures, we've got one of those "quality debate videos" Synergy is worried about. It's just a suggestion, but you might want to update the "arist" to a contemporary... Like "Lady Blah-Blah" or "4en$icks."

Just to set the record straight - I may not end up winning the contest, but I'm the one who came up with the idea of the "I WANNA BE DEBATED" parody on Facebook. My suggested first bridge: My tubs are on the airplane, My briefs are on the floor. I wish I were emulsified, So I could spread some more. I haven't had a shower Since 1994 Just flow, flow, flow, flow, flow Yo, Ho!

How about if the University of Washington, the University of Georgia, the University of Connecticut, and Rutgers University get together and form the Three Dog Knight Conference with the winner getting the covetted Kellog's K-9 Trophy? Then the University of Hawaii, Boise State, UNLV, and Fresno State can form the Western Division of the Big East Conference, assuming, of course, that Arizona and Arizona State don't want to leave the Pacific Coast Conference. Whoever finishes second would play the runner-up from the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference. Conference USA will move its championship game to Tokyo, while the Mid-America Conference Champion gets an automatic bid to the "Big Ditch" Bowl in Panama (John McCain doing the coin toss). The Mid-American Conference runner-up goes to the Timothy Geithner/GM Bailout Bowl in Detroit. The night before the national championship game, BCS #3 and BCS #4 would meet in the prestigious Capitol One Classic, brought to you by Big Five Sporting Goods. Somebody - please - just shoot me...
-
Frankly, I couldn't care less what they do as long as the names of the conferences match the number of schools!!! But no... nooooooooooo... The Big Ten will probably end up with twelve teams, while the Big XII has ten... At that point, I'm gonna go blow my brains out at some 7-11 after downing several 6-PAC's 10-4, Y'all...

I assume that everyone sees how this relates to the term "meaningful" in the new PF topic. http://www.buzzle.com/articles/political-buzz-words-how-to-frame-a-debate-with-meaningless-words.html
-
These sources will never be confused with publications by the Kennedy School of Government, but I think they should provide meaningful insight into both the PF topic for nationals and politix DA's in general. http://hnn.us/articles/1127.html http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/02/15/john-podesta-american-pol_m_463079.html

I know that some folks are thinking about interpreting the topic as covering the entire Western Hemisphere. Here's something you will really enjoy: http://www.undp.org/publications/Democratic_Dialogue_Handbook_28Feb07.pdf See Chapter 1.3 ("Defining Dialogue") in particular. -

I've finally done it! I've found an absolutely definitive source on topicality... and I don't have the slightest clue what it means. For the first time I think I know how Nietzsche felt... http://faculty.washington.edu/jgastil/pdfs/ConceptualDefinitionDeliberation.pdf -

I think these are dead on point without being overly dry and clinical: http://www.ojr.org/ojr/glaser/1082521278.php http://www.radicalmiddle.com/x_postpartisan.htm http://www.uta.edu/huma/agger/fastcapitalism/2_2/bellamy.html http://www.huffingtonpost.com/stephen-p-croley/filibusters-should-promot_b_463512.html And, at the risk of stating the obvious, this topic cries out for a "language K," although you wouldn't call it that. If I were you, I'd check with the policy debaters on your squad to see what might be relevant. -
At the outset, anybody debating the new PF topic should carefully define (and IMHO support) the phrase "current trends [note: plural] in American political dialogue." I suggest you start with: http://www.pollingreport.com/ and http://www.realclearpolitics.com/ The "Polling Report" site is particularly good as a wellspring for all other research. In addition, anyone who wants to debate in a one-day, four-round PF tournament at Glendale Community College (CA) on Friday May 14, 2010 - please contact me ASAP for details, or call Prof. Jean Perry @ 818-240-100 ext. 5504

Applying the deductive skills I acquired in high school debate, I think I have developed a lead on the identity of the Times Square Bomber. http://www.reoiv.com/images/random/propane.jpg

This news hits me like a death in the family. Not only (at least in my experience) did Redlands always have an oustanding NDT program, its Summer Institute and HS tournament were traditionally among the best.
