  1. Hello Class of 2012, If you are potentially interested in joining the Kansas State Debate Team and attending KSU, please email jmgreen@ksu.edu - the sooner you contact us the greater likelihood of getting scholarships. On November 1st, ACADEMIC scholarships are awarded through the University Financial Aid Office. The majority of our debaters receive some form of academic scholarship - they are, in nearly all instances, larger than the debate scholarships. If you desire more information about our team - please email with your questions and or visit www.ksu.edu/debate (our website will be overhauled soon, but the text regarding joining the team is accurate). We offer a coaching staff of 8 with over 100 years of debate experience, a large squad with people from all walks of life and debate experience including pure novices and returning National Champions, and a travel budget large enough to ensure everyone has the opportunity to travel extensively. My intention of this thread is not to start a X program is better than another discussion. I personally have respect for the programs and coaches at all of the Kansas and KC programs (WSU, KU, ESU, UMKC, KCKCC, JCCC, and KSU). The truth is KS H.S. debaters are lucky in that there are a number of great colleges and universities that you can possibly attend within the state. But, attending KSU and getting large quantities of scholarship dollars usually requires earlier action than attending others. Good luck to all the seniors - enjoy your last year of high school debate, Justin Green Director of Debate Faculty - Communication Studies Kansas State University
  2. There is no need to download or fill out the scholarship application. If anyone is interested, simply send an email and make sure that you have already applied to K-State. Once you have applied, it is possible for us to see your academics, test scores, and with the NFL membership reports, it is easy to see the successes debaters have had. If there are students interested whose schools do not participate in the NFL, then please provide a summary of high school achievements (overall record, years of Varsity participation, and highlights). We will be calling individuals to discuss in more detail. Right now, we just want to make sure that everyone who is potentially interested in a scholarship has an opportunity to get one. Thank you for asking Michael - you and others should expect a phone call over the next week, Justin Green Director of Debate/Faculty Kansas State University
  3. K-State will make offers on our debate scholarships for the 2011-12 year by the end of January. Although we do not have a full-ride, we have many partial scholarships. We have several quality applicants already. However, it is not too late to let us know you are interested. If so, please email jmgreen at ksu.edu. I would hope this thread does not turn into X school vs. Y school discussion. K-State nor others in KS recruit debaters via this method. If you would like further details about KSU's Debate Team, please ask. and Yes....we will have an institute this Summer. The exact dates and information will be released later this month. 4. If you are interested in attending Kansas State University and debating, please make sure that you apply for both admission and academic scholarships by November 1st. Nearly ALL of our current debaters received some form of an academic scholarship, but you cannot be eligible if you do not apply on time. There are partial debate scholarships available, please contact Justin Green if interested in these or desire more information about the team (jmgreen@ksu.edu). There are a host of potential reasons (debate excellence, academic success, and a sense of family) to attend KSU and Debate. More can be found at http://www.ksu.edu/debate OR read about recent successes at kansasstatedebate.blogspot.com Justin Green
  5. Due to ever climbing costs of using our dormitories and cafeterias, we have decided with great trepidation not to host the Wildcat Debate Workshop this Summer. We always prided ourselves on being able to offer financial scholarships to those in need, while offering a fair price to those who could afford it. After an increase in room and board, neither one of these things were possible. We were never interested in hosting a workshop designed simply to make money; we appreciated the students we got who frequently had to work to pay for their attendance. As a note, our faculty over the past two years received little in comparison to other institutes; they did it because they loved debate. Thank all of you that previously attended and our wonderful teaching staff. Despite our modest size in comparison to other institutes, our NFL finishes in speaker awards and teams, number of top-5 state finishes and the number of alumni who went on to college was far greater than some institutes that had nearly 4 times as many people. This can probably serve as testiment to the positive environment that was created here. This was more a result of the quality students we had, but certainly positively influenced by the quality of faculty. We hope that those who attended can carry what they learned to future generations of debaters and to other fields in their lives. I personally will miss the opportunity to interact with students in this capacity over the Summer, but am confident that other quality institutes exist to fill the void. Our FREE coaches workshop will still happen from July 5th-9th. Those wishing to stay in the dorms will be charged simply for the cost of the dorm. Details to come out soon.... 7. If you are interested in debating in college and live in Kansas, KSU is a great option. We have: one of the largest travel budgets of any public university in the country, 5 coaches, a history of turning mediocre debaters into college superstars, and have cleared at major national tournaments this year (currently ranked 9th in NDT overall sweepstakes). Everyone who works hard gets the opportunity to compete and will get attention. Our top team this year primarily runs policy arguments, but we have critical debaters as well. Our motto is to make debaters better at what they want to do. There are multiple other opportunities in Kansas and around the country, but very few of them have the combination of the coaching resources, the travel budget, diversity of arguments, and track-record of turning good Kansas debaters into great ones. (This is not a knock on any other program - we at KSU have great respect for our competitors.) If you would like to learn more go to http://www.ksu.edu/debate More importantly, apply to KSU and to the general academic scholarship fund immediately. There was a November 1st deadline, but that can be extended in some instances. Please let me know if you are interested. jmgreen@ksu.edu Thanks for your time.
  8. After a very successful 2008 Summer, the Kansas State University Debate Team is proud to announce the 2009 Summer Institute is now accepting applications. All four members of the 5A and 6A state champion 2-speaker teams from Kansas are alumns of the WDW. Special congrats also goes out to all three speakers from Kansas (WDW alumns) who received speaker awards at the 2008 Nationals. Many other alumns had successful years. Our registration is open at http://www.ksu.edu/debate/highschool/wdw.html Any questions can be directed to jmgreen@ksu.edu Looking forward to another great Summer, Justin Green Director of Debate KSU
  9. If anyone knows where I can find one, please direct. Thanks, Justin Green
  10. Please contact me - Justin Green - jmgreen@ksu.edu There is a November 1st deadline for academic scholarship application. Please fill out the general application as well as the scholarship application (under the financial aid section) before November 1st. These scholarships are substantial in nature. Several KSU debaters are on FULL-RIDEs because of their strong academic scholarship applications. A number of successful debaters have already contacted us and are interested in KSU. If you would like to add your name to the list, please let me know. I will personally contact the financial aid office on your behalf. We travel nationally and are successful. More information about our team can be found at www.ksu.edu/debate I will also be at KCKCC this weekend - I'll be wearing KSU purple and am happy to field questions or talk to you more about our program. Looking forward, Justin Green Director of Debate Kansas State
  11. John is right - Halli and Jeff will be joining our staff next year. I agree with your concern about the translation of critical arguments to a judge pool in Kansas. But, it would be a gross mistatement to assume that Jeff and Halli are not well-rounded knowledgeable debate coaches/judges/teachers/mentors. Halli has focused her energies while at Baylor on the policy side of arguments. The WDW is also excited to announce the addition of National Champion College Coach Jackie Massey of Oklahoma University as a periodic lecturer, judge, and speech critiquer. Students will have the option of choosing some of the people they work with. You want to focus on disads - then sign up to research a DA - you like the K - then feel free to criticize. If you have questions or concerns, please let me know. Justin Green WDW and KSU Debate Director

  15. The Wildcat Debate Workshop will build upon our great successes to offer a workshop focused on academic rigor, . Some unique features of the Wildcat Debate Workshops: 1 - Electronic production of evidence - All debaters will be taught how to cut, scan, and produce evidence electronically. Institute attendees frequently find that they can more easily write blocks once they return home. 2 - No Hidden Fees - Many institutes will not advertise they charge evidence copying or lab fees. These can at times escalate to $200 per student. 3 - Quality Instruction - All of our Primary Instructors have coached for several years after debating successfully in high school and college. As much as you might enjoy college instructors as your . Although we will have debaters involved, the primary instructors will provide lectures and daily interaction. The 7th Ranked Kansas State Debate team welcomes the high school debate community to join us in Manhattan, KS for our one, two, or three week camp in July. I can personally assure you that every one of the participants of last summers workshop would recommend it to others. This year we will offer a different curriculum for returning students. Check out details at http://www.k-state.edu/debate/camp.html If you have questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Justin Green Director of Debate - Kansas State University
