  2. So that HUGE file with the new Afghanistan 1NC about how Obama is going to hold off increased troop deployment in Afghanistan? Bad news: CNN February 17, 2009 (http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/02/17/obama.troops/index.html) WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Barack Obama has approved a significant troop increase for Afghanistan, Pentagon officials said Tuesday. President Obama says al Qaeda threatens American from the Afghan-Pakistani border. The new troop deployment is expected to include 8,000 Marines from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, as well as 4,000 additional Army troops from Fort Lewis, Washington. "This increase is necessary to stabilize a deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, which has not received the strategic attention, direction and resources it urgently requires," Obama said in a written statement. "The Taliban is resurgent in Afghanistan, and al Qaeda supports the insurgency and threatens America from its safe haven along the Pakistani border." See what CNN's Barbara Starr says about the increase on the AC360 blog Another 5,000 troops will be deployed at a later date to support combat troops, bringing the total to 17,000 the Defense Department said. A senior administration official confirmed the total. that's from this morning :/
  3. not my favorite, but this is the classic: Watson 77 (David Watson, philosophy professor, Washington University, World Hunger and Moral Obligation, 1977, pp. 118-9.) One may even have to sacrifice one’s life or one’s nation to be moral in situations where practical behavior would preserve it. For example, if a prisoner of war undergoing torture is to be a (perhaps dead) patriot even when reason tells him that collaboration will hurt no one, he remains silent. Similarly, if one is to be moral, one distributes available food in equal shares even if everyone dies. That an action is necessary to save one’s life is no excuse for behaving unpatriotically or immorally if one wishes to be a patriot or moral. No principle of morality absolves one of behaving immorally simply to save one’s life or nation. There is a strict analogy here between adhering to moral principles for the sake of being moral, and adhering to Christian principles for the sake of being Christian. The moral world contains pits and lions, but one looks always to the highest light. The ultimate test always harks back to the highest principle – recant or die – and it is pathetic to profess morality if one quits when the going gets rough.
  4. Solon runs a home-cut Cogeneration Aff Advantages: Power Grid weak->Terror attacks->Grid Fails ->Econ Collapse ->Dirty water It's pretty much non-topical, and the plan text is laughably awkward. Something about providing signed certificates for the first few people to do Cogen. Oh and a bit of funding.

  7. Enough reviews...somebody post the goddamn thing up here... Synergy was right: we all suck at the internet. I'm sad I don't have HBO but it'd be nice if someone who did would figure out how to get it on here.
  8. I just want to second the sentiments expressed in that first post. It was really quite fun to witness. Pity Aaron got sick...they might be in the finals if it wasn't for that... Really something to be proud of, though....really
  9. Some people can't go...so North Coast looks like this: North Coast District: Hawken Macklis/Herts Hawken Eby/Hobson
  10. Restoshaman, i would HATE to suggest something illegal, but... Is it possible your friend could rip it and put it up there as a torrent? That'd be much appreciated...
  11. Don't forget Somali Medical Teams... or that "The Congo reactor is a Nuclear deathtrap and this somehow constitutes PHA" case run on Nat Circuit
  12. I have a serious dilemma. Does anyone know where I can order Rubbermaid Roughnecks (14 gal) online? The old debate box standby has disappeared from amazon except for being sold for $144 in a 12-pack with shipping being $120. The only place I can find is Lowe's but I was hoping to order some file racks and some timers for novices next year and I'd like to order them from the same site. As a corollary, I think we need a thread (preferably sticky) devoted to sharing debate shopping websites. Ordering stuff is often the best option for boxes and timers, and I'm getting bored of perusing websites...share resources! So yeah. help would be appreciated.
  13. This post was originally a joke... I'm really tempted to post Irony backfiles Thanks for the Neg Rep
  14. High School Debater (3 years). I'm somewhat experienced and have qualified for States and NFLs. I'm eager to judge any round... PARADIGM: First on top, I'll say that I like Case. When the Neg actually sits down with the 1AC and then points out some key flaws or misconceptions to me, that's gorgeous. Even better when the Affirmative comes back and traces how the case operates in relation the D/As or any other arguments in the round. That said, I'm more than willing to judge the other stuff: The usual lineup is fine. T: I'm cool with it. Don't make it the only issue of the round or you'll bore me to death. If the only issues in the 2NR are procedurals, I'll be somewhat peeved. DA: I view these as the ever-present offensive weapon. As long as you have somewhat specific links or at least ones that don't clash, run as many as you want. Having them correlate with specific Case strategies can be pretty sexy, too. CP: Meh. I view the 1AC as something that should be constructed carefully so I'm hesitant to vote for a CP that just piggybacks off of the 1AC cards or text. That said, I'm still all for clever CPs... K: If it's generic, don't run it. If you think it links specifically, go for it. I love good Kritikal debate and I'll eagerly vote for a team that sustains one. Being able to communicate it and defend it in CX, along with a strong link level debate goes a long way. Overall: I'll vote for a lot of things. There's no argument that I'll refuse to listen to. I tend to default to PolicyMaker, but I'm Tab and will consider anything you prove to me.
