  1. There are at least six positions open in the El Paso area and they are desperate for speech people to take these jobs. The window of opportunity to fill these positions with speech people is closing very quickly. If you know any kid graduating with a background in speech/debate, please contact Shawn Mena at 915-253-2500 ASAP. She is willing to help with relocation, etc.

    Now What?

OK - I have this problem every year - What do I do with my Varsity Debate class for the next month? I have LDers, CXers, PFers, & Congress kids all mixed together and they have nothing left to work toward. I could have the CXers write cases, DAs, Ks, CPs, etc for next year, but what about everyone else? They don't know what their topics will be and it doesn't seem fair. What about the Seniors? They have no motivation to do anything at all. Any suggestions?
  4. OK - This past weekend some kid from another school told me that he ran a "stagger perm" on my team's DisAd. (We won, but still.) My response was, "What is a 'stagger perm'?" and "You can't Perm a DisAd.", but this kid (novice, mind you) insists that some team at the TOC last year sucessfully Permed a DisAd using a "stagger perm". When I asked him to explain a "stagger perm" he said it was where you do the Aff Plan 1st and then do the... I would say Counter Plan or Kritik, but he says DisAd. 1. This sounds like an illegitamate Perm to me. Isn't the point of a Permutation to test competitiveness and see if you can do BOTH at the SAME TIME? And... 2. How the frick do you Perm a DisAd? What exactly can a DisAd do at the same time since it doesn't have a Text or Alternative? Yeah, this kid was a novice, and he may just be full of bull-shalulus, but he may have heard part of a story and just got some facts mixed up. I just want to make sure the I know what's going on with Debate Theory so that my kids don't get left behind when things start to change. Can somebody please help clarify all of this for me? Thanks!

  6. Lake Travis High School in Austin, Texas is looking for a full-time Speech & Debate Co-Coach for the 2009-2010 school year. Ideally, the candidate should have a debate background including both CX and LD and the ability to teach Communications Applications. It is a great opportunity to work with a wonderful group of kids in a fabulous school district. The link to the job description is http://www.applitrack.com/laketravis...ategory=Speech
  7. Actually, I'm not going anywhere. My team has just gotten so big that I REALLY need help. I have 90 kids this year and 120 signed up for next year. We have a GREAT group of kids. So, please let me know if you know someone that may be interested. Honestly, I'd like to focus more on the Oral Interp and Extemp events. So, I'd like to find someone that loves CX and LD as much as I love Interp.

  9. I been informed that I will have a visually impaired debater next year. I'm a little excited about the challenge, but I'm having some trouble inventing modifications for him so that he can be sucessful in a competitive setting. Anyone have any ideas?
  10. I need to come up with an idea of who to propose to run our UIL District meet. Typically our district chooses someone to not only run the meet, but that individual is also responsible for providing judges. Does anyone have any ideas about some possible names I should toss around tomorrow? I guess I should also tell you that I'm in the Austin area, but I'll take ideas from all over Texas if that director would be willing to come to us. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
  11. I don't know what the scholarships actually amount to, but I had a camp administrator from the Championship Debate Camp at Concordia University in Austin, Texas mention that if I had students in financial need that they would work something out for us. You can find information about the camp by googling "Championship Debate Group". I'm sure you will find some contact information on the site as well.
  12. At Lake Travis High School, Debate is considered an honors course, and it is weighted the same as an AP course.
  13. I was finally able to convince the administration at my school, Lake Travis High School in Austin, Texas, that I really need an assistant to keep up with the competition in our area. So... they have officially posted the opening. They said that next year they are planning on easing someone in by giving them Communications Applications (basic speech) classes while they attend tournaments with the speech and debate team on the weekend. However, I'm sure that if they find a true debate lover (which is, of course, what I really want) we will work out some type of arrangment to fullfill your speech and debate addiction. I was thinking that some team teaching in debate classes would be nice. I currently have 60 kids signed up for the team next year, but I know of about 10 others that are definately getting in. Right now we have two debate classes and one oral interp class, but if classes get as big as I anticipate they will probably add another section of something. Also (while I'm on my rant), I would say that I really need help mostly with LD Debate. We are losing our best varsity debater this year, and my grasp of LD is seriously lacking. My CX coaching capability is pretty good, but I would also love it if someone else could come in and take the kids further than I have been able to. If you are from Texas you will understand what I mean when I say that I am a very UIL type of coach. So, we tend to do pretty well in UIL CX (although we could stand to do better), but I would like some help in making them more competitive on the TFA circut. The kids are very excited about next year's CX topic, and a few of them have already began writing cases. So, we have some very motivated and well behaved kids on our hands at LTHS. Lake Travis really is a great place to be! Here's the link if you're interested. http://www.applitrack.com/laketravis/onlineapp/jobpostings/view.asp?category=High+School+Teacher
  14. Exactly, I don't really want recommendations for a textbook. I just want a good list of books the kids will enjoy reading, and the books will help them with debate as well. These two sound very interesting. Thanks.
  15. I was thinking of creating a list of books that every debater should read. I want to incorporate the list into my class requirements. I was wondering what books you guys think should make such a list.
