  4. The NDCA's Open Evidence Project for the 2011-2012 season is now live. Many files from the early summer institutes have already been posted and hundreds more files from more than a dozen workshops will be added throughout the remainder of the summer. This is a great resource that is totally free for everyone (even non-members of the NDCA). If you want to support the project, become an NDCA member. Grab the files from: http://www.debatecoaches.org/page/open-evidence-project Enjoy, Bill Batterman Board Member, NDCA

  9. If both St. Mark's and Westminster win, the final round will be for the Baker Award. Pretty amazing that a season-long award could come down to a single debate.
  10. I've been told that Carrollton defeated Lexington in one of the quarterfinals but I don't know the results of any of the other three debates. Semis should be well underway by now: anyway know more? Thanks, ~Bill
  11. They lost the policy debate location—the Cambridge Rindge & Latin School—due to renovation. They are expected to have it back next year and so they will be able to return to the old format (staggering rounds of policy and IE; one giant policy division). Whether they will want to, I don't know.
  12. Speech and Debate Coach/Program Coordinator Timeline of Job Opening: Applications will be accepted through February 28th Position being hired for: 2011-2012 School Year and Beyond Location: San Jose, CA Supervisor: Director of Speech and Debate Salary: Competitive Full Time Salary Description: Presentation High School is currently seeking a full-time Speech and Debate Coach and Program Coordinator for the 2011-2012 school year. Presentation High School is an all-girls Catholic preparatory school in beautiful San Jose, CA. The Speech and Debate team is relatively new at the school though it is the fastest growing organization on campus with over 110 members out of school that only has 800 or so kids. We compete locally, regionally, and nationally and are really looking to grow the program beyond the current slate of events that we compete in. There are currently 3 full time faculty members on campus that work with the Speech and Debate Program, two who have substantial preps devoted to Speech and Debate. The Coordinator position would include tournament coordination (managing team registration, entries and sign-ups, as well as logistical planning), judge coordination, and managing practice schedules. The Coaching position would involve being Head coach for one Debate event (preferably Policy Debate or Parliamentary Debate in order to grow our program), prep-period coaching, and assisting with other events including Speech. Applicants are required to have a BA and experience coaching high school Speech and Debate. Applicants should submit a resume including at least two references to Tim Case at tcase@pres-net.com. Interviews will be conducted immediately following the application deadline. http://www.pres-net.com/aboutpres/employment.html
  13. Thanks, all. I updated the initial post — if anyone can fill in those last couple missing debates, let me know. If anything is wrong, let me know that, too. ~Bill
  14. Does anyone have a paper copy of the Ohio Valley results that they could scan? Barring that, can anyone help reconstruct the elimination rounds? If folks are willing to help tag the appropriate pages, I'm sure others would greatly appreciate it. To do so, simply go to a team's wiki page and click on "Page" -> "Details and Tags". Next to "tags", click "edit" and type "2010 glenbrooks policy" (without the quotes) and then "save". A link to that page will then show up on the Glenbrooks page (http://wiki.debatecoaches.org/2010+Glenbrooks+%E2%80%94+Policy+Debate). Have at it, ~Bill

  17. I agree, Guy—and that's why I'm a huge fan of teams like Vermillion (from South Dakota), St. George's (from Washington), etc. And in the past, that list has included great teams from Kansas: SMW and SME, Olathe, etc. It's the method/style I celebrate, not the travel budget. And Duane knows that, but couldn't help but take a shot at the national circuit. ~Bill
  18. Well said, Jim. When I celebrate "national circuit debate", I'm celebrating a *method*—fast, research-intensive, and open to "counter-intuitive" arguments and judged by experts/educators. This style of debate is ridiculed by large swaths of the high school forensic community as anti-educational, unrealistic, and unworthy of funding/support. I disagree vehemently, and the NFL National Tournament provides decisive evidence to support my position. Year after year, teams that have been trained in the national circuit method prevail over teams that have been trained to debate slowly, without an emphasis on research, and in front of untrained/lay judges who discount counter-intuitive arguments out of hand. And these national circuit teams win rounds that are overwhelmingly in the non-national circuit style, many of which are judged by individuals who have an explicit bias against national circuit debate. When the students I have coached, judged, and established friendships with over the last four years demonstrate that their training in national circuit debate has prepared them to be persuasive, powerful advocates equipped with the intelligence, critical thinking, and rhetorical skills necessary to persuade lay audiences of the veracity of their positions, I celebrate. And for good reason: this is what I've dedicated my life to doing... teaching students the national circuit method of debate. And I've done that without apology—and without denigrating those programs with more wealth and more resources. And without cheating in an attempt to level the playing field. I'm proud of that. ~Bill
  19. You've become a caricature, Duane. Whitney Young is a UDL school. Rowland Hall had a lot of budget problems this year that prevented them from traveling as much as they have in the past. But both teams had fantastic seasons and are now in the finals of NFL Nationals. I'm really glad you're here to preach, though. Actually, I have a solution: coaches of non-circuit schools should work in the tab room and unethically inform their students whom they will be debating in the elimination rounds the next morning. It would level the playing field, I think. Ever tried that, Duane? ~Bill
  20. Rowland Hall is the first team from Utah ever to reach the finals. Whitney Young is the first UDL team ever to reach the finals. And regardless of who wins, this will be the 26th consecutive year that a national circuit team has won the NFL National Championship (1984—Huron, South Dakota). The fun begins at 12:30PM and will be streaming live at nflnationals.org. ~Bill EDIT by kevinwy (moderating note): The majority of these posts were in the other NFL topic, but that thread is going to stick to specific round discussion, congratulatory posts, results, etc. For comments about resource disparity or anything else that is tangentially related to this *specific* NFL tournament, please post here.
