  1. you might want to wait more than a day before you bump a thread...otherwise, you're just spamming. Strictly defined, capital is goods used to produce more goods--for instance, a factory. As critics of capitalism tend to put it, capital is the means of production--things that can be owned that are used to generate wealth. Capitalism is thus an economic system where the owners of capital and the users of capital are different--that is, there are factory owners, who own the capital and the profits from the capital, and there are factory workers, who own neither and are employed by capital owners (capitalists). You can see pretty easily why critics of capitalism phrase it this way; under capitalism, workers basically are capital--capitalists pay for their use and upkeep (wages) and own the wealth they generate. Someone who likes talking about Zizek more than I should take the latter half of this question.

congrats dan, you deserve it. to those who might disagree: a given debate is about the skills of debaters, not the truth of their arguments. if it were about truth there would not be time limits or the implied necessity of defeating your opponents. i was not at the tournament but i am confident in stating that dan did not win a victory for patriarchy in that debate anymore than john's and my aff wins on the peacekeeping topic contained russia. the point of the award is that the value of debate goes beyond any given argument won or lost, trophy earned or break missed on speaks. debate gives us an incredibly valuable community who can stand apart from these things and laugh, cry, support and care for one another, and above all put the round aside so that, win or lose, we can be secure in knowing that we are not alone. if you have a problem with dan's arguments, work that out with him. but don't for a minute question his love for and dedication to this community.
  3. I've coached at round rock HS for the past couple of years, it's a successful, fun program that has a lot of fun with debate. Leander and Dripping Springs aren't bad places to be, but don't really compete nationally. Feel free to contact me if you have any more specific questions about the program, and good luck.
  4. At this point, we have 4 $10,000/year scholarships to award each year to incoming debaters. The process of awarding them is difficult to pin down at this point as the pool of applicants is still growing. The best in you have is to shoot me an email identifying yourself and giving a brief introduction of yourself as a debater. Our scholarship is awarded after the university gives out its fortunately generous academic scholarships, so theres still a long while before we start making final decisions.
  5. Thanks Chris. Looking forward to getting back in the game.
  6. We are pleased to announce that Jarrod Atchison will be the new director of forensics at Trinity university. He was an enormously successful debater for Wake Forest and and coach for the University of Georgia. Our administration is committed to expansion of the program, and I would like to invite any of you who have applied to Trinity to shoot me an email at nburr (at) trinity (dot) edu. We offer four $10,000/year scholarships for debaters. This is your opportunity to get in on the ground floor of what promises to be a successful and committed program.

  10. multitude was intentionally written for a wider audience than empire. less theory more explanation.
  11. i'll grant you most of that. freud was a mysogynist, and had some really stupid and morally questionable beliefs and practices, but he also did get people thinking about the brain in new and exciting ways, and that thought hasn't necessarily lost its salience. lacan went a long way towards keeping freud alive, and the psychoanalytic turn in feminism in the 80's established that there's a lot of truth alongside the bullshit in his thought in gender. as far as the psychology/psychoanalysis divide goes, for the present discussion it sorta misses the point. you won't find many (serious) clinical freudians these days, nor will you find many (serious) philosophizing ego psychologists. the reason psychoanalysis works in the context of debate generally and critique specifically is that it's not about brain pathology or diagnosis, but is rather a truth-seeking exercise. the alternative isn't whatever random self-diagnosis you're seeing freud universalizing, but following through on the process itself. this, of course, begs a question of the ultimate utility of the alternative, but thats a broader issue with the kritik, not specific to its psychoanalytic side. the point is, freud may have been a jackass, but that doesnt necessarily mean he's useless. thanks for the thoughtful response.
  12. ego psychologists never quite got over their inability to outdo the psychoanalysts for relevance. their criticism is that freud gives a bad science of the brain but that was never quite the point. the philosophical side of all of this is where such an argument would be coming from, and the freudians/lacanians will outdo that 90% any day of the week.
