  1. James Logan HS has a room at the Hilton (Friday through Sunday night) that would welcome additional female inhabitants in return for a share of the cost. If you are interested, please get back to me at les_phillips98@yahoo.com. Many thanks! Les Phillips James Logan HS
  2. The San Francisco Bay NFL District seeks well qualified policy and LD debate judges for its district tournament, to be held Friday and Saturday, March 22 and 23, at Pinole Valley High School. We're seeking good critics who have no prior or current coaching relationship with competing schools in our district (CPS, Head Royce, St. Vincent, James Logan, Lowell; judges affiliated with Peninsula or South Bay schools would be welcome). Please contact me at les_phillips98@yahoo.com -- and please pass the message on. (And, yes, we know it's the CEDA weekend ... sigh ... ) Les Phillips

NEEDED: policy and LD judges for the Stanford tournament, Feb. 11 and 12. Please contact me at les_phillips98@yahoo.com Les Phillips James Logan HS
  8. Who'd like to practice against my policy team Friday? Or Thursday, for that matter; we're here early. Respond to les_phillips98@yahoo.com
  9. I judged SF Lincoln in prelims. I had never seen them before. I came away thinking, the tournament is theirs to lose. They didn't lose it. They're a great team for any tournament, because (on the aff at least) they've mastered the arts of strategy and argument economy, so they don't ever have to talk fast really. Why didn't a "TOC team" win the tournament? Not many were there. Les Phillips
  10. Two policy judges available for Michigan and/or Glenbrooks. Transportation not required, just housing and compensation for judging. Contact me at kafkalp@gmail.com Les Phillips

  12. I had not thought too much about the "first semester" thing. It seems to me that that might work well in that there's a limited season for novices and less ambitious programs and then more intense programs can continue their season out of state second semester? That could work nicely. I would like to hear from people who find the first semester restriction deleterious . . . "As mentioned, there have been some students who have felt that they were denied opportunities because of travel restrictions. The rule seeks to maintain the participation level of our local tournaments. I'm not sure that lifting the travel ban would have a big negative impact because I don't think that there is a great deal of desire from coaches to travel out of state any more than they already do (for the most part)." -- that seems reasonable; what the rest of you guys think about that? Very very interesting that PF gets no traction in Kansas, gets immense traction in places like Colorado and South Dakota, with significantly reduced South Dakota policy numbers as a result . . .
  13. The coach-succession factor you mention is an important one. But it's interesting that in places like Kansas and Missouri PF has not caught on much or detracted from policy much, whereas in SD and Nebraska it has, and maybe I'm overgeneralizing but it seems to me like these states all have a fair bit in common in terms of debate culture -- though I guess Nebraska policy has always been a little more like Iowa-West than any of those other states? From what I've seen. How is Nebraska policy faring? Seems kinda diminished, from where I sit.
  14. I know. I once observed Vicki Fellers of Wichita East demonstrate that the distance to the Glenbrooks was 499 miles, rather than 501 miles. Some years ago, wasn't the exemption much smaller/shorter? Or wasn't there an absolute ban, except for NFL Nationals? Enlighten me.
  15. Dear Lamp, Thank you for the background, etc. So, in your opinion, What Is To Be Done? And about what? If you don't want to feed a thread, feel free to answer me privately.
