  • Biography
I've been involved in debate since the fall of 1964, when my HS misread my request to take Spanish as a request to take Speech. I often wonder what life would have been like if I had followed the directions on the enrollment form more precisely.

  3. The umpteenth annual version of the Trojan Classic is schedule for January 9 & 10, 2015. While we are a state-qualifier tournament here in Oklahoma, we also offer a Championship division and a Novice division of virtually every speech and debate event known to western civilization for our non-Oklahoma guests. Find us on joyoftournaments.com and join the fun.

  6. St. Marks is NOT likely to accept you as an independent entry. That tournament got burned decades ago (mid 1980s) by a team that came down on their own, had a car wreck, and their parents sued St Marks for allowing them to come down on their own. The school wound up paying a significant settlement on the issue.

  8. Just to add to Solax10s correct post, in past years the link story on BizCon is that whenever the USFG starts picking winners & losers in a competitive market (ie, they give subsidies to one form of alternative energy over another form), business tends to get cold feet and withhold their investment capital...after all, who can afford to go up against the limitless resources of the USFG? Hopefully that gives you some idea of the kinds of cases where you can run this one. Its a Golden Oldie disad, but it benefits from being a believable scenario.

  10. Not a egregious error (I hear newscasters and members of Congress butcher both of these) but still irritating: pronouncing "fiscal" as "fiz-i-cal" pronouncing "introduction" as "in-ter-duk-shun"
  11. Tulsa's Union HS is attending with 1 team
  12. Keep in mind we recruit kids at the end of their 8th grade year to enroll in debate as 9th graders. I recruit kids to policy debate in a very different way than I do their parents (and I do recruit both groups). To the kids I talk about the rounds being loud and fast (like a good video game), the thrill of winning, trophies, beating people intellectually, and the travel, missing school, etc. To the parents I talk about college scholarships, raising SAT & ACT scores, looking good on an admissions application, etc. Different audiences, different appeals.
  13. Too bad the treaties topic didn't make the top 5; that looked like fun. I like 2, 3 & 8.
  14. Excellent thread; many thanks to those who posted here.

    Camps

Actually I don't think that is true; Session 2 starts July 19 and ends August 8. That's their latest camp of the summer. The person asking for late camps might have better luck looking on the East Coast, where many high schools don't begin their term until after Labor Day.
