Novice k's

Recommended Posts

Hi y'all,

Im in novice debate and know that in novice debate we shouldnt run K's.

Still, just wondering about some fun BS ks that can win rounds:

- gender k (not sure what its called but when someone uses a gender specific term)

- fun k (their case wasnt funny)

...

Thanks

Don't be that team that reads bullshit to win rounds.

The "gender k", as you call it, is more commonly known as the Gendered Language K, usually used when two debaters refer to the other team as "you guys", or their evidence assumes everyone is masculine, etc. The team reading this K will argue that it is violent against non-masculine bodies, and should be rejected. There's a lot of controversy regarding if you should read this if you identify as male, I'd argue that it depends.

EDIT: On another note, if you want to get into kritik debate, I'd suggest finding the following -

1. A solid cap/neolib file

2. A solid security/orientalism/Pan file

3. If you're feeling risky, check out a gender identity file, Fem IR is a good one for this year

4. And if you really want to get into it, an imperialism file

The best starter Ks are probably Cap and Security. Very easy to understand and explain (at least the "vanilla" versions)

Cap links quite obviously to any economic aff. Honestly cap links to pretty much everything. the link is they perpetuate capitalism, the impact is usually structural violence or some kind of destruction of civilization from growth type scenario. Perhaps someone who is more into the cap lit could better explain this. The alt is generally all out rejection of cap or historical materialist pedagogy in order to create more targeted revolutions.

Security links to any war type scenario. the argument is that threat construction leads to arms racing and actually exacerbates and creates the impacts the case tries to solve which turns case. the alt is almost always rejection or to do nothing. It's generally a critique of epistemology, world views such as realism, and can be applied as a large case turn.

Edit: changed impact to case. sorry its late and I'm tired.

On Cap, it links into literally everything. Like, everything. Cannot ever stress that enough. If you're looking for a good k to run every round that has you covered cap has got you, and it has turns to most every impact, plus some pretty big stick ones of its own. I'll probably post a small Cap supplement file on this thread tomorrow, along with one for security, on the house for the novices, just get the main files from openev, I find that UMich and UTNIF produce the consistently best files. As for authors, read Zizek. He's a really good starting point and he's written a TON on cap. One of the best cap impact cards of all time (Zizek and Daly 04) is from him, and he also gives good single issue links. Basically the main arg you're gonna run with cap is that you control the root cause of all their impacts, and that their reform inevitably fails without a radical rejection of cap, which is what the alt normally is (I'm personally a big fan of counter memory as a cap alt).

As for securitization, what Benny said is one possible impact, but there are several. A really big one for this topic is the construction of China as a threat, which would be the Pan K, which is like Sec. + Orientalism. But basically it's the idea that the aff attempts to securitize us against a threat of some sort, which actually makes that threat inevitable because the logic of security means we must constantly create new threats to protect ourselves from. You can also get some really good impacts on otherization and stuff from that.
