"Opportunity Cost DA"

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

In theory, could you format a counterplan as an "Opportunity Cost DA" so as to:

1) Avoid condo/framework etc debate

2) Avoid perms

3) Bypass local rules (it's this way for me) saying no CPs in JV?

Unforntunately it is not as simple as yes. You would need to have a piece of evidence that indicates that there is a trade off between the plan and the counterplan (which would function as the link) and you would need evidence that the counterplan is happening in the status quo (which would be the uniqueness).

An example is if you were reading a China CP to do OSW, you could create an opportunity cost DA by saying China is doing OSW now, the plan trades off with Chinese OSW, then some impact (probably chinese econ).

this thread is so funny because counterplans are literally only theoretically justified as opportunity costs to the plan. all counterplans are opportunity cost DAs

Uh, if you decide to not cheat and read a mutually exclusive CP I wouldn't call that an "opportunity cost".

Remember kids: "If it's not mutually exclusive it's usually abusive"

That's literally the definition of an opportunity cost - an opportunity lost by doing the plan. Mutually exclusive CPs are the best example of CP as opcost, which is why that was an old theory requirement for them.

Opportunity Cost DA=Mutually exclusive CP=Trade off DA

Example: the NOAA Disad that says an increase in one program trades-off with funding for another. Earth Science DA on the space topic said new stuff in space tradesoff with earth monitoring.

the one difference between a Tradeoff DA and a mutually exclusive CP is the fact that  the DA will happen absent the plan. That might be what you are asking?
