Baudrillard

Recommended Posts

Long career, lots of different books with a wide variety of arguments. "Baudrillard" isn't a single Kritik. Is there a certain Baudrillard argument that you want explained?

Well Baudrillard talks about a lot. The way I've seen him used in debate most often is to kritik simulative policy making. Here is a really good lecture https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6TG3LQN0q_VZWk5Y3NBWXFwLW1KeGVlRDNMNFR1c1pmY1hJ/edit?usp=sharing  Is there any argument you have heard I could probably explain or try to figure out what it's saying.

Can someone that has really read his work explain this fucking thing?

Debate isn't real, you aren't real, nothing is real.

PS: Disneyland is real.

Possible Hyperreality would be  a good place to start ?

Hyperreality is false images that become real through their simulation

For example (very, very simple version):

Correction:

I make a map of Chicago

The map isn't real because it doesn't have all the details.

So I make it more detailed until it has all the street signs etc

Still not good enough

I make the map bigger

It's now the size of Chicago because it is Chicago

That's the hyperreal

The unconditional affirmation of human life is a violent form of oppression. The Affirmative makes us slaves, shackled to the tautological cycle of positivity that proliferates society without the possibility of a meaningful death.

Baudrillard 2002 (Jean, “The Spirit of Terrorism: Hypotheses on Terrorismâ€, Verso 2002, translated by Chris Turner, pp. 68-70)

All the same, we should try to get beyond the moral imperative of unconditional

aim, are the ones who today symbolically occupy the position of master.

We have internalized the blackmail of security, encasing ourselves in cellophane to ensure our shelf lives. This view reduces the body to a diseased object in need of protection and insurance, making life nothing more than a process of continual mortification.

Baudrillard 76 (Jean, smart Frenchy, Symbolic Exchange and Death, pp. 177-180, Sage Publications)

Security is another form of social control, in the form of life blackmailed with

doleful, defensive book-keeping, locking every risk into its sarcophagus.

I think for any author who is exceptionally confusing, listening to lectures or reading some of their -ian authors (people who base their literature off of different authors ideas...these tend to be less confusing...i.e. Mikko Joronen's writing of Heidegger or Rasch's writing of Schmitt) can be helpful.
