Performance Debate

Recommended Posts

I know that there is a lot of lit for using hip hop to liberate -- hip hop isn't as cool without the music.

Why not? It's usually just another means of delivering an argument. Sometimes it helps supercharge solvency for changing debate norms or spreading messages.

like the framework - what does playing a rap song at the beginning have to do with the advocacy?

What does citing evidence have to do with the advocacy?

There are probably a number of ways to warrant those arguments:

1. Rap challenges dominate notions & norms.

2. Rap = awareness + social change

3. Poetry good, its transformative.

You (probably) have to also win offense versus policy/public policy.

In a related tangent - does anyone know of any articles that discuss the use of music as a liberating / revolutionary tool? Not just hip-hop but other forms too.

I need this for my Enter Shikari aff.

It's funny because I know a team that plays "Ghandi mate, Ghandi" for one of their Ks

Here and on a similar reddit post there was talk of Enter Shikari used in kritikal arguments. I never heard of them before but looking them up ... meh... maybe I'm not listening to very good songs of theirs (the most popular ones according to spotify), maybe it's just not my cup of tea.

I don't see what the difference is between reading a poem that makes an argument and a scholarly article that makes an argument. It depends on why you are 'performing'. Maybe you are demonstrating the performative nature of an institution or ideology (masculinity, ableness, etc.). Maybe you are providing an aesthetic breaking point from traditional cookie cutter politics. Maybe your performance has revolutionary potential, an act of rebellion from traditional norms, using debate and pop counter-culture to protest something. Maybe you are attempting to revive debate, taking the route not so traveled instead of the main road. Maybe you are just conducting epistemological terrorism, ontological anarchy simply attempting to produce unknowledge. Maybe you just wanted to. There can be a plethora of reasons to play music instead of read cards or whatever.

I'm suddenly wishing that you'd been here earlier this afternoon to witness my feats of creative destruction. The aftermath can be found in the Complain forums, but it's not nearly impressive as the process was.

Yeah, the editing was a little.... disorienting  ;)

Also, this is what I was saying with my earlier post as well.

It's Broad Runs Deleuzian anarchy aff

Yup. Can you explain how it's Deleuzian though? (also it's their neg strategy too sometimes)

I mean it's not too Deleuzian in the shell (it's mostly the Wolfi Landstriecher/Feral Faun stuff) but the way they end up spinning the argument is an anarchist take on Deleuze (all the May evidence is about anarchism in a post-modern/post-structuralist context) (refusing state based methods of knowledge, etc.) They read Ballatyne and others in the block

No Sleep Tonight is my favorite song; I was going to make an aff out of Tribalism where we join Cuba in socialism. (probably a terrible idea)

Shikari was a third generation Aztec, his tribe accepting human reality

It was the basis of their ability, to sustain with human tranquility

But civilizations encouraged religions which in turn introduced depravity

And that was as big a realization as when my boy Newton discovered gravity

Cos it transformed the way we bounce about on a daily basis

Not content with a doubt about the knowledge of who's up there

Quick! give him a name, a trident, and a chair sharpish

What happened to wonder?

Why can't we accept we're not capable of thunder?

So we welcome the lies with open arms,

and we turn into Suckers when they turn on the charms

You're trying to run us all into the ground,

to be swallowed by the soil and trapped by the rain,

You shout through our speakers

And we don't turn them off, cos trapped in silence is tougher

But this time we'll turn the speakers off

And we won't stay silent, WE'LL MAKE AS MUCH NOISE AS WE CAN!

And I ask what's a though without a voice to voice it

It's just a thought

It's just a thought

The original affluent society, floating free of capitalistic society

But all that's left is the pack vibe, but the catch is dogs don't eat other dogs

We're able animals employed by criminals in this cannibalistic society

Where we scrimp and save, just to behave with the utmost propriety

You're trying to run us all into the ground,

to be swallowed by the soil and trapped by the rain

In your concrete garden of falseness

You're trying to run us all into the ground,

to be swallowed by the soil and trapped by the rain

In your concrete garden of falseness

You shout through our speakers

And we don't turn them off, cos trapped in silence is tougher

But this time we'll turn the speakers off

And we won't stay silent, WE'LL MAKE AS MUCH NOISE AS WE CAN!

And I ask, "What's a though without a voice to voice it?"

It's just a thought

It's just a thought

It's just a thought

And I ask, "What's a though without a voice to voice it?"

It's just a thought

It's just a thought

It's just a thought

We will shout our heads off, we wont stop until you hear

We wont stop until you trip up upon yourselves

And I ask, "What's a though without a voice to voice it?"

It's just a thought

It's just a thought

It's just a thought

And I ask, "What's a though without a voice to voice it?"

It's just a thought

It's just a thought

It's just a thought

And we won't stay silent, we'll make as much noise as we can

We won't stay silent, WE'LL MAKE AS MUCH NOISE AS WE CAN!

We won't stay silent

We won't stay silent

We won't stay silent

We won't stay silent

We won't stay silent

We won't stay silent

We won't stay silent

We won't stay silent

We won't stay silent

I've never hit it, but our two varsity teams both have... so I've always wondered how it's deleuzian, thanks...

Also, they run it on the aff? (I thought they were more policy)

They ran it just for us on aff (<3) at Pennsbury because it was a K judge and they knew we'd be going K. It was a smart idea because that was my first time hitting it and we almost had nothing to read. We still picked up.
