There was a rather heated incident at the 2011 TOC where a particular student had a number of bid rounds, but claimed he had been racially discriminated against at tournaments, preventing him from bidding, and received an at large to the TOC without a bid. I doubt the TOC at-large committee would do something like this again, though, because there was so much backlash in response to this case.
