Scott Deatherage's "The Speech"

Recommended Posts

This is just fantastic. I highly recommend everyone on this forum watch this video and take notes.

Tristan Morales, ex-NU debater and 2-time NDT champion, once told me he read his notes from this speech before every tournament and found it useful every single time.

Ross, thanks a bunch for putting this up. Hopefully it never gets lost.

Hopefully it never gets lost.

Can we get this stickied? I look at it every time I write a new case and it will definitely help others too.

The silence at the beginning of the video is deafening. You can tell every one of the students in that room has enormous respect for Deatherage, and rightfully so.

Question: does anyone know how he got nicknamed "The Duck"? That seems like it could be a great story.

Could anyone explain what is meant by 'character' and 'commitment'?  He goes into the other 2, but I don't know what kind of character and what type of commitment excels in debate.
