You're making a lot of assumptions regarding the accuracy and reliability of those numbers. But, of course, they're from a website, so they must be true.

 

"Value" is determined by the market. If someone thinks that they can recoup a $5,000 purchase price over a reasonable time by putting in a reasonable amount of work, then it's reasonable for them to value the site at $5,000.

by definition... of the most basic attack one could launch on a server... DDoS attacks originate from multiple IP addresses.

cept most are probably from hijacked comps and thus one IP (most likely from this forum) is to blame and can be matched to the IP's on the mod database.

Realistically it probably wasn't even a DDoS attack because that wouldn't force that database to crash in a way that is unrecoverable. It was likely because Cross-X runs an old version of vBulletin, or some of the software on the server might be out of date.

finding the originating IP for modern DDoS attacks is often impossible, if not extremely arduous (hence why the FBI often handles DDoS backtracking). I don't think kerpen is putting in that time/effort for a site he is about to sell.

DDoS attacks typically propagate through hundreds-thousands of machines... even if you managed to sort through all of that and detect a single, originating botnet, you can't "un-spoof" IPs and trace it to a single IP.

The process is so difficult and complex that no reasonable server admin defends against DDoS by rooting out the individuals responsible.

 

assuming that there is 1 readily accessible IP that can be determined to be the source of an attack is a pretty naive understanding of DDoS, especially for someone who wanted to take over the server immediately following a DDoS attack....hence I chose to be an ass. sorry if this was offensive

Hey everyone, just wanted to identify myself as the current bidder.

 

I obviously don't know if I will win the auction, but I just wanted to assure the community that if I win there should be no concerns about the future of Cross-X.
