Dr. Fox On Socks 3928 Report post Posted December 30, 2010 Wondering why there is already bidding, especially at such a high price. Website is only valued at $1,600 and daily ad revenue is at $2.25.http://www.cubestat.com/www.cross-x.com You're making a lot of assumptions regarding the accuracy and reliability of those numbers. But, of course, they're from a website, so they must be true. "Value" is determined by the market. If someone thinks that they can recoup a $5,000 purchase price over a reasonable time by putting in a reasonable amount of work, then it's reasonable for them to value the site at $5,000. Gary Busey 1453 Report post Posted December 30, 2010 if i was a buyer, i would be interested in some kind of income verification other than kerp's word (as sterling as it is). maybe eapen is making his triumphant return.
Red Spy 146 Report post Posted December 30, 2010 (edited) Possible Options. 1) Porn site crossex.com amirite? (used to be a porn site, now open domain) Also, who haxx3d cross-x? Is there an IP that Ddos'd it? I'm relatively familiar with servers, so I *could* take over admin duties, provided if kerpen allows it Edited December 30, 2010 by Red Spy
Johnny Bravo 2754 Report post Posted December 30, 2010 Any idea who the bidder is? Obviously the name was made so that no one knows who it is. Someone fess up I was the one that made the bid. I will not tell you what my max bid is, but I will look forward to being the new owner of Cross-X.com in a week's time.

Antonucci23 410 Report post Posted December 30, 2010 (edited) Almost all of these above posts translate to: "Wow, I wish that Phil would give away his property for free or on a special interest-free payment plan, especially to me because I accumulated a lot of fake points." C'mon. The man's done enough for all of us. If you don't like the price, don't pay it. It is entirely appropriate, though, if this is the dying of the light, that it be accompanied by people yelling NO I TOTALLY THINK I KNOW HOW TO DO THIS BETTER ALTHOUGH I WON'T. I don't know if anyone can do a better job. It takes a really savvy person to write terrible econ impact cards while running a for profit debate evidence website and not have a single team question the legitimacy of the evidence or the author. 3

Tomak 1214 Report post Posted December 30, 2010 How exciting! I hope you make $50k by the close of the auction. Make some cold calls and advertise! There have to be a lot of enterprising debaters finishing their degrees in comp sci or business with big ideas for the site.
jwright 379 Report post Posted December 30, 2010 Is there an IP that Ddos'd it? I'm relatively familiar with servers by definition... of the most basic attack one could launch on a server... DDoS attacks originate from multiple IP addresses. I think this is sufficient to disqualify you from taking over "admin duties" 1

I think this is sufficient to disqualify you from taking over "admin duties" cept most are probably from hijacked comps and thus one IP (most likely from this forum) is to blame and can be matched to the IP's on the mod database. hack was probably masterminded by someone on this forum who was seeking to buy it -.-
Beastwick 11 Report post Posted December 31, 2010 by definition... of the most basic attack one could launch on a server... DDoS attacks originate from multiple IP addresses. I think this is sufficient to disqualify you from taking over "admin duties" Unless of course it was one machine that spoofed being multiple users by making a virtual machine botnet or something...regardless, there isn't a need to be an ass about it. So stop.

LordAuch 204 Report post Posted December 31, 2010 Realistically it probably wasn't even a DDoS attack because that wouldn't force that database to crash in a way that is unrecoverable. It was likely because Cross-X runs an old version of vBulletin, or some of the software on the server might be out of date.

jwright 379 Report post Posted December 31, 2010 cept most are probably from hijacked comps and thus one IP (most likely from this forum) is to blame and can be matched to the IP's on the mod database. hack was probably masterminded by someone on this forum who was seeking to buy it -.- finding the originating IP for modern DDoS attacks is often impossible, if not extremely arduous (hence why the FBI often handles DDoS backtracking). I don't think kerpen is putting in that time/effort for a site he is about to sell. Unless of course it was one machine that spoofed being multiple users by making a virtual machine botnet or something...regardless, there isn't a need to be an ass about it. So stop. DDoS attacks typically propagate through hundreds-thousands of machines... even if you managed to sort through all of that and detect a single, originating botnet, you can't "un-spoof" IPs and trace it to a single IP. The process is so difficult and complex that no reasonable server admin defends against DDoS by rooting out the individuals responsible. assuming that there is 1 readily accessible IP that can be determined to be the source of an attack is a pretty naive understanding of DDoS, especially for someone who wanted to take over the server immediately following a DDoS attack....hence I chose to be an ass. sorry if this was offensive

That must be the new "irony" I keep hearing about. In recognition of your skills as a raconteur, can we have this conversation on your debate site that you've run successfully for many years? Oh, that's right. We can't, because you don't have one. Maybe someday they will give an award for snark, and you will come in third or something. 2

poor.yorick 90 Report post Posted December 31, 2010 Thursday files have become practically obsolete. Really? Where are there free Thursday files (other than cutting one's own)? LordAuch 204 Report post Posted December 31, 2010 Hey everyone, just wanted to identify myself as the current bidder. I obviously don't know if I will win the auction, but I just wanted to assure the community that if I win there should be no concerns about the future of Cross-X. I'm not a porn site, a weird int'l dropshipping company, a shadowy Phil Kerpen owned conglomerate doing offshore tax sheltering, RingTonz R Us, or a private school kid who will make it ONLY for my team. I'm an assistant coach and a computer engineering student with plenty of experience administrating forums and running a webhosting company.
