Add-On?

What is an Add-On?

And how does one structure an Add-On?

It's basically an extra advantage for the affirmative, although sometimes the internal links aren't as strong as the 1ac advantages. Many are strategically made to work as something that the affirmative solves that a neg cp doesn't.

They usually range from 2-3 cards.

In most cases, you want an add-on to be structured exactly like any advantage: uniqueness, link, and impact. Sometimes negative arguments will already give you certain components of the add-on such as the impact, in which case it will just be a turn. Add-ons are typically used against counterplans in order to have impacts to weigh against the net benefit. Make sure that the new advantage you read has a fairly strong story, otherwise the block can turn it, making the 1AR an uphill battle.

You should carry add on advantages for areas of your plan that the negative could pic out of. For example on the energy topic if your plan involved Wind and Solar, the neg could pic out of either one and claim to solve most of your case and run a disad to the one they picked out of. So... you would want to have add ons for wind and solar and run add ons for the one they picked out of. Also add ons can be strategic if they solve the internal link to a net benefit of a counter plan that the neg runs or if they solve the internal link to the impact to a DA.
