Snarf 3598 Report post Posted July 27, 2009 Are there some debate curricula already published that go over the basics of how to argue and cut cards? Evidence, claims/warrants/impacts/links, speaking and judge adaptation, etc? /Edit/ What I'm looking for is REALLY basic. It could apply to any form of debate. This is for middle schoolers. Robbgray 47 Report post Posted July 27, 2009 There are lots of good resources available to help teach debate many of which will be very helpful to novices. The National Debate Coaches Association web site http://debatecoaches.org/ has an entire section titled “Lesson Plans – Policy” found on the left hand side, just scroll down. I especially like the Emory Debate Manuel which they also mention and have the link to: http://debatecoaches.org/files/2008/09/emorypolicydebatemanual.pdf I also recommend the movie “Resolved”. Also there are lots of videos of debates on line. Find a slow one and have all your novices flow it. One speech at a time. Check them against your flow. After every speech discuss what happened and what you would do in the next speech then continue the video.
nathan_debate 745 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 Have you looked at http://middleschooldebate.com/ Although it focuses on Parli, it should have some helpful suggestions in both the curriculum.... http://www.middleschooldebate.com/resources/curriculumcenter.htm (it includes different resource like a 12 week curriculum and argument structures like (A-R-E) and resources sections: http://www.middleschooldebate.com/resources/resourcesmain.htm You might think about getting them started with simple, relevant topics to 11 and 12 year olds. (with SPAR or Public Forum type time constraints)
