patriotsdebate 10 Report post Posted May 10, 2009 Ok, so as someone going to gdi for the first time (or any camp for that matter), how does the tournament work? If you are attending 4 week can you partner up with a 2 week-er or a scholar?
TheHutt 1472 Report post Posted May 10, 2009 Ok, so as someone going to gdi for the first time (or any camp for that matter), how does the tournament work? If you are attending 4 week can you partner up with a 2 week-er or a scholar? From my knowledge of when I was there last summer there's two divisions: the scholars division and open division. Scholars division is all the GDI Scholars plus the best debaters from some of the non-scholar labs. Open is basically everyone else, including novices. There's six prelim rounds in each division and you break 4-2's and above to the appropriate number of elim rounds. You're only allowed to use the camp evidence, although you're welcome to get creative with it (for example I ran a Consult Japan CP during this year's tournament using cards from the generic Japan CP file). Generally your partner will be in the same lab as you are. The exception is if there's an odd number of people in the lab for some reason, in which case you might be assigned a partner from a different lab for the tournament. Needs More Consult Japan 1753 Report post Posted May 10, 2009 Thank you. Does this imply that they assign partners? basically you can sort of pick your own but lab leaders get last call
patriotsdebate 10 Report post Posted May 10, 2009 Ok, that makes sense. Because, my team is sending 5 people to the 2 week varsity lab and I don't want to debate with any of them for camp. It would be more beneficial to debate with someone from a different school, would it not?
titanofdebate 9 Report post Posted May 11, 2009 I think its best to partner up with someone different...so you realize and improve weaknesses you usually would rely on your normal partner for....speaking of that who is going to the three week program (the debate track)?? TheHutt 1472 Report post Posted May 16, 2009 I had a terrific time at GDI last summer. It was an unforgettable experience and I was proud to unconditionally recommend it to every member of my team. CK McClatchy (Sacramento, CA) will be sending several rising sophomores to the Debate Track. These kids have torn up the JV division at major West Coast tournaments so be sure to watch out for them. Additionally, thanks to the presence of middle school parli debate in our school district, we will also be sending at least one current eighth grader (no, that's not a typo)to the Debate Track as well. He is just insanely smart, has already had practice rounds against me and my freshman teamnates, and with lots of pre-camp preparation during the summer he'll be plenty ready for the challenge.
