Was there more than one game?

Are the contents of the first letter instructions for betting?

Predictions?

Is what the con artist used our guy's money for relevant?

Did our guy bet on the winner?

Did our guy bet on the loser?

Did our guy place a bet on a particular team because of the con artist's predictions/advice?

Was there some sort of assurance that the team our guy picked was supposed to win?

Are the contents of the second letter just a confirmation of the bet?

Did the con artist have any influence on the game?

No assurance, as such.

Are the contents of the second letter just a confirmation of the bet?

No, and to clarify, our man did not make his bet with or via the con man. He made his bet with an unrelated third party.

Did the con artist have any influence on the game?

No

Were both letters from the con artist?

This question assumes fact not in evidence

Was the man led to believe the con artist had influence on the game?

Was the man led to believe the con artist had inside knowledge relative to the outcome?

Yes to one of these, but which one is not relevant. Our guy was convinced that the con man knew who would win.

did the conman send anything through the mail to our original person?

If so, was it a letter?

Package?

Results of the game?

Before or after the game had been finished? (dichotomous, not binary question)

Yes, we've established that he sent more than one letter to our guy.

Package?

No

Results of the game?

Yes, although you didn't specify which game...

Before or after the game had been finished? (dichotomous, not binary question)

Before, but again, which game...

Did the con man actually make a bet?

If he would not have been conned would he have received a last letter?

Norris is correct. Though I too am not posting his answer so it's still open. Here are some answers that may help...

(21:58:23) ######: did the con man make overtures that he was involved with the contest?

(21:58:43) deusdealia: no

(21:59:18) ######: is this a real life example?

(21:59:39) deusdealia: it's possible in real life, but I don't know of any case where it's happened

(22:00:11) deusdealia: and, of course, there's no guarantee it would work in the real world either, but it could

Note, Norris informs me that there are real-life examples of this happening

(22:00:36) ######: was there only one letter?

(22:00:40) deusdealia: no

(22:00:51) ######: were there two letters?

(22:00:57) deusdealia: no

(22:01:16) ######: were there between 3 and 8 letters?

(22:01:45) deusdealia: let's say 8

(22:02:33) deusdealia: although this con is possible with a minimum of three letters and increases in effectiveness (for the con) the more letters that are sent)

(22:02:51) deusdealia: and there is no maximum

(22:03:01) deusdealia: but 8 works for our purposes

(22:03:15) ######: did the con mail the letters to other people?

(22:04:05) deusdealia: yes

Did all of the letters say something different?

Did each letter require a response from our guy?

Do the other people who the con mailed the letters to matter?

Did all of the letters say something different?

No, but they were not all identical either.

Did each letter require a response from our guy?

No

Do the other people who the con mailed the letters to matter?

The people themselves, no, but it is important that the con man sent letters to people besides our guy.
