Okemos 2008 Debate Tournament

FRIDAY 09/26/2008 AND SATURDAY 09/27/2008

The Okemos High School Debate team is pleased and proud to invite you to our fourth annual Debate Tournament. 2008 is the third year we're at the high school, we hope to continue at this great location.

DIVISIONS AND FEES

We will offer Varsity (Open) 2P and Novice 2P divisions of policy debate. Both will have 5 prelims. Open will break to octas, and Novice will break to semis unless entry conditions require a schedule revision. The fee to enter a team in either division is $40, and the fee for each half-hire (covering one 2P team) is $60.

Please make checks payable to Orion Smith. If your school does not allow this you may make checks out to Okemos High School Debate. Should you need to hire a judge please let me know ASAP. We may try to offer a JV breakout round or two.

TOURNAMENT PAIRING

We will offer two randomly paired rounds followed by three high-low within brackets debates. We will allow judge strikes for about 10% of our Varsity (Open) judging pool.

ENTRY

Entry is exclusively via email. Please send your entry to Orion Smith at smithori@msu.edu with the following information: school, number of teams, divisions, names of debaters and judges as those become available. A sample email will be available on our tournament website. Fees will be frozen at 5:00 PM the Wednesday before the tournament.

LODGING

For the first time in three years, there is no home MSU football game the weekend of the Okemos tournament! This means hotel availability will be quite good relative to recent years. For a very inexpensive hotel we suggest the Lansing Days Inn, which has in the past given us a very competitive rate. This hotel is within easy driving distance of the tournament.

Days Inn

6501 South Pennsylvania, Lansing MI 48911 (517) 393-1650

Alternately for inexpensive hotel space there is the Super 8 in East Lansing:

2736 East Grand River Ave.

East Lansing, MI 48823 (517) 337-1621

Unfortunately this year, the small size of our squad prevents us from housing any debaters. We apologize for the inconvenience.

SCHEDULE

Registration on Friday 09/26 is from 2:35 to 3:15 in the cafeteria. Complete tournament schedule will be available at the tournament website.

Do you accept hybrid teams or maverick debaters?

Either are OK, though I'd prefer not to have mavericks and I'd ask questions if it seems that a person could have had a same-school partner (i.e., don't be maverick for no reason). I might also prevent mavericks from getting speaker awards due to the maverick bonus.

Because Dan and I were the only ones who went to camp this year, so the rest of the varsity debaters refused to go. Dan made varsity tennis (bleh) and had a tournament the same day, as did Matthew. Ah well, gives us more time to write blox

Y'all should come for several reasons.

1. Best tournament food ever. Not only do we stray away from the typical pizza orders for a day, Orion and the debaters of the team cook amazing food for the coaches lounge.

2. You get to see Elmo, Creepy Elmo, and Genocide Chicken--the infamous Okemos mascots.

3. Top speaker award is ridiculously tall (4 feet)?

4. Speaker awards are customized pens.

5. You can buy your "Shut up and Cut Cards" shirts

6. Hanging out with debaters = the best time ever.

I'm assuming the top speaker award is a different shape than the rest.

Yes- the top speaker award is a ridiculously huge, shiny trophy

hey, I am looking for a judging and/or coaching/card cutting job for this tournament.

I don't need housing or transportation

I debated at Chattahoochee and am a Sophomore at MSU.

Hey out there uncommitted judges -

If you are interested in getting hired by the tournament I recommend that you contact me by email, I'll need a phone # and email address from you as contact info. Hiring is first-come, first-served meaning that I'll get in touch with people who ask in the order of the asking.

get pumped guys. best tournament all year.

Also Orion told me he would do the mexican hat dance at the award ceremony--not to be missed!

So long as I get to define that to my specifications, sure thing!

Nothing you did at the awards ceremony could possibly qualify as a Mexican hat dance.

Also, for anyone interested:

JV Finals

So you're saying that getting started with "are you ready to rumble?" wasn't good enough for you?

Anyways, here are more detailed results. Thanks to Joe Kelly for typing these up, and for telling me how to change my laptop's keyboard layout back from Dvorak afterward. (non-supernerds: don't bother looking it up on Wikipedia, just be content that you are not a supernerd like Joe and I.)

Thanks again to everyone for coming, I hope you had a good time!

Just to echo everyone else--thanks Orion and the Okemos team for your efforts this weekend, a well run tournament! Just a small correction to the results in the semi-finals. Groves DK defeated DCD KL. DCD had advanced instead of South Lyon. The quarters were correct it just didn't translate into the semis correctly
