your favorite albums

Recommended Posts

for me a "favorite band" or "favorite song" has always been an arbitrary concept. OiNK got me started listening to albums as a whole rather than as individual tracks, and it's completely changed the way I look at music.

So, what are your favorite albums?

Dillinger Escape Plan- Calculating Infinity

Decent diversity, i think.

neutral milk hotel - in the aeroplane over the sea

modest mouse - the moon and antarctica

smashing pumpkins - mellon collie and the infinite sadness

bright eyes - lifted... or the story is in the soil, keep your ear to the ground (or however you correctly punctuate that title...)

led zeppelin - led zeppelin 4 (or zoso, or four symbols, or whatever you want to call it)

radiohead - ok computer when I'm in the mood for it. when i'm not i can't stand it.

this list probably says more about me than i'd care to admit.

here's a few that aren't quite as far up there as the rest, but I still love:

sex pistols - nevermind the bollocks here's the sex pistols

olafur arnalds - eulogy for evolution

godspeed you! black emperor - F♯A♯∞

nine inch nails - the fragile

2pac - all eyez on me

immortal technique - revolutionary vol. 2

I never really got all the hype around london calling, but it's been a while since I've listened to it and my tastes have changed significantly since then. I'll give it another listen.

Once you start putting together lists this long, the word "favorite" loses a lot of its meaning...

I don't mind the long lists, I just think the thread's title should be changed to "Long Lists of Albums I Like"... ;)

Fair enough, but I don't know that I can reduce mine much more than what I have. I suppose something like this might work:

My favorite progressive rock album: The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

My favorite classic rock album: Brothers in Arms

My favorite live album: Solo Acoustic, Volume 1

My favorite post-rock album: Agaetis Byrjun

My favorite alt album: Indian Summer

My favorite instrumental album: Rodrigo y Gabriela

Beyond that, though, it really becomes apples-to-oranges.

Girl Talk- Night Ripper
Seriously? He played before Blues Traveler and the Violent Femmes at a show I saw at Red Rocks. Easily the musician most out-of-touch with his audience that I've ever seen.

Not to say he's not skilled... if you're, uh, into that kind of music.

I haven't seen him live, but the word-of-mouth seems to indicate that he is either the best show people have ever gone to or the worst. Must be a hit-or-miss performer. But yeah, I find it to be the most wonderful music in the world when I'm feeling short-attention-span-y. It's like listening to 30 second clips on iTunes, but everything segues perfectly and is beatmatched.
