Sarah: How competitive will entry be for Juniors and Seniors for your scholars program. I have a couple soon-to be juniors on my squad that have just started in their sophomore year, do they have a shot?

I like how misleading the name is...I really though there was going to be a camp right next to the beach.

I think their chances of acceptance would be good, it really depends, if you get in contact with me about specifics I would be happy to give you a more concrete answer.

Also, Miami University was founded before Florida was a state! Miami (fl) is named after the real Miami (in Ohio)!

We are excited to announce that Josh Gonzalez will be on the Scholars staff for this summer. Josh has extensive institute and coaching experience including coaching at Michigan State for their NDT wins. Also, Josh is an excellent lab leader and has taught for many years at the SDI. Josh will be leading the Sophomore Scholars Lab with myself, Sarah Spring.

As always more info at miamidebate.blogspot.com

Hey everybody! Now that the NDT has wound down, it seems like a great time to update you on some of the great features of our 2008 institutes:

1. Senior Scholars Leaders Coach NDT Champs!!!:

brad_casey_larmon.jpg

Brad Hall
and
Casey Harrigan
, the leaders of our Oxford Senior Scholars lab, coached the 2008 NDT Champions, from Wake Forest University!!! What more can we say? Our Senior Scholars lab will offer you an opportunity to work with two coaches who are at the absolute top of the game. In addition to the NDT champs, Brad and Casey have coached the winners of this year's Kentucky Round Robin, not to mention that Casey was the 2006 NDT champ, and Brad the 2006 runner up.

2. Best...meal plan...ever

Let's face it - dorm food just doesn't cut it some days. This summer, at least half of your meal balance at the Miami Institutes won't have to be spent at the dorm cafeteria. Through a partnership with MUBucks's "Uptown Bucks" program, Miami Debate students will be able to use their institute meal credits at more than
, including Domino's, Pizza Hut, Jimmy John's, Subway, Quizno's, Skyline Chili, Qdoba, Cold Stone Creamery, and dozens of Oxford's great local restaurants. Click on the link above for a more complete list.

Check back in the next few days for more updates and information about some of the great things happening at our institute this summer. In the meantime, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us at spring.sarah@gmail.com.

Ben,

The Redhawk is an outstanding camp for all debaters. Both younger and older more experienced debaters have excelled at the Redhawk. We will have separate labs based on experience, so I wouldn't worry about being in a lab with students at a lower level of experience.

Our lab leaders for the Redhawk are very experienced and ready to work with all experience levels. In the advanced lab, Michael Greenstein is the Director of Debate at Georgetown and has coached at top level high school debate programs such as Pace Academy and New Trier. Mike has taught at numerous institutes including the SDI and the DDI. Debbie Lai is a graduating senior at Michigan State University and was recently awarded a prestigious Rand fellowship. In our beginner lab, Garret Abelkop will be a senior at Michigan State next year and will likely be one of the top debaters in the country. Eli Jacobs debates at Harvard and had a amazingly successful high school career in Ohio winning the Ohio state tournament and making it to late elims of the TOC.

We also focus on practical experience giving speeches. Our lectures are structured to include hands-on speech training with lab leaders in small groups immediately following the lectures. We also have more than 10 practice debates over the course of the 3 weeks that will give you lots of good feedback.

Hope this helps answer your question,

Sarah Spring

Yes, there are scholarships available. Most scholarships are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. We attempt to get anyone to camp that we can. Resources are limited, but we try our hardest. Just contact me with your own situation to see what we can do.

We're excited to announce the addition of another staff member to our Oxford Scholars staff this summer:

pic.jpg Eli Brennan is the Associate Director of Debate at the University of Minnesota and an instructor in their Communication Studies department. Minnesota is one of the most exciting new programs on the college debate circuit - in just their first year as a squad, they cleared teams at several tournaments, including placing three teams in the elimination rounds of CEDA Nationals!!!

Eli brings a fantastic blend of knowledge and experience to the Miami Institutes this summer. A quarterfinalist and First Round At-Large qualifier to the NDT, Eli is a fantastic innovator, teacher, and judge for arguments all over the spectrum, but particularly with critical arguments. Well versed in such critical authors as Derrida, Lacan, Zizek, and Foucault, Eli brings an impressive set of perspective and instructional skills to our staff.

First, Eli will be leading the Senior Scholars lab, he's going to be awesome. I'm very excited.

Also awesome are the junior scholars lab leaders, Paul Johnson and Jane Munksgard. They both coach at Iowa now and were highly successful college debaters.

There are rides from either the Cincinnati or Dayton airport on the 22nd. We will arrange them, our staff takes vans to each to pick up anyone who needs a ride to Oxford. We would prefer that they go from noon to 6pm.

Thanks,

Sarah
