The Groves Debate Team cordially invites you and your team to the 19th Annual Wylie E. Groves Debate Invitational, to be held at Groves High School and Berkshire Middle School on Friday, November 9th and 10th 2007. Groves is located at 20500 West 13 Mile, Beverly Hills, Mi 48025, on the corner of 13 Mile and Evergreen (Cranbrook) Roads in Beverly Hills, MI.

TOPIC:

The National High School Debate Resolution for 2007-2008 ( Public Health--Sub Sahara Africa)

 

FORMAT:

Varsity two person, junior varsity two person, novice two person, and novice four person. VARSITY, JV, AND NOVICE TWO PERSON DIVISIONS WILL COMPETE ON BOTH FRIDAY AND SATURDAY. NOVICE 4 PERSON WILL COMPETE ON SATURDAY ONLY

 

LOGISTICS:

ALL DEBATES WILL TAKE PLACE AT GROVES HIGH SCHOOL. Please plan on parking off of Evergreen near the auditorium entrance where registration will be held.

 

TABBING:

ALL DIVISIONS WILL USE A COMPUTERIZED TAB PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM RANDOMIZES THE FIRST TWO ROUNDS AND POWER MATCHES THE NEXT THREE.

 

TOURNAMENT ENTRY:

Please FAX or email attached name registration sheets (judges, debaters) to (jl02 bps@birmingham .k12.mi.us)) or 1-248-203-3636 by 5 P.M. on Tuesday, November 6, 2007.

 

JUDGES:

The two person divisions: One qualified judge for every two 2-person teams or

fraction thereof PER DIVISION ( one 2 person team PER DIVISION require one judge, two 2 person teams require one judge, three 2 person teams require two judges, etc.).

 

The four person novice division: One judge per four person unit. Varsity

debaters may judge both novice divisions.

 

Ballots and elimination rounds: Judges are expected to be available to judge one round past their own team’s elimination in ALL FOUR DIVISIONS. This

includes judges hired by a school. Additionally, all judges, including hired judges, are required to write complete ballots whether or not they voluntarily decide to provide oral critiques. Schools whose judges do not WRITE all preliminary round ballots will NOT receive their ballots and result packets.

 

 

RULES:

 

MIFA: The Tab Room/Tournament Administration will not enforce MIFA, NFL or NCFL rules or guidelines regarding disclosure of decisions, reading of evidence, prompting or “tag teaming” or evidence citation. Judges may, or course, enforce certain rules, guidelines and preferences in individual debate rounds. We only ask that judges announce their preferences to the debaters prior to the beginning of the rounds.

 

Behavior: The Tournament Administration, upon investigation, reserves the right to remove from the judging pool adjudicators whose personal behavior is inappropriate or offensive. The school which has provided the removed judge will be financially responsible FOR ANY UNCOVERED DEBATES. Examples of inappropriate behavior include, but are not limited to: leaving the room during speeches, including cross-examination; rude or intemperate written or oral comments to debaters; undue familiarity/favoritism shown to a team in a round; evidence of bias or hostility exhibited towards competitors or harassment of any nature. SMOKING ON SCHOOL PROPERTY IS FORBIDDEN IN ACCORDANCE WITH STATE LAW.

 

FOOD:

Food, snacks, and refreshments (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) will be sold at Groves in the cafeteria by Debate/Forensic Boosters.

 

FEES:

$45.00 per each two person team (varsity, JV, novice 2 person) and $45.00 per 4 person novice. Please make all checks payable to Groves H.S., not John Lawson. Payment is due prior to, or at, registration. If you are a new program or are undergoing severe financial difficulties, please contact us regarding a reduce financial commitment.

 

AWARDS:

Top 15-20 speakers (depending on entry size) in each division. All teams reaching elimination rounds in each division will receive awards.

 

LODGING:

We are providing one “tournament hotel:” Courtyard by Marriott, 27027 Northwestern Highway, Southfield, MI 48034 to hold a block of 25 double rooms at a rate of $78.00 per room. The cut off date is November 2, 2007. After that, rooms will be available for $78.00 but only if they have not been sold to other guests. Up to November 2, 2007, coaches should call 1-800-321-2211 for reservations. The hotel sales manager is Shari Tiede (866-557-8420). Our block of rooms is listed under “Falcon Debate Invitational 2007.” The hotel is about 7 minutes from Groves HS.

 

Limited Student Only housing will be available on a first come, first served basis for teams traveling significant distances. Please call or note registration requests by November 2, 2007.

Register in the foyer of the Groves H.S. Auditorium (back of school, off Evergreen Road) on Friday, November 9th , between 2:30 and 3:15 P.M. NOVICE 4 PERSON registration at 7:30am on Saturday November 10th in the Media Center.

Hired Judges:

A limited number of hired judges are available at $130.00/full judge and $80.00/half judge.

Drops:

Drops after 6 P.M. on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 will be assessed their original fees. Drops which involve judges hired at the coaches’ request by the tournament will be assessed their full fee for the judge regardless of the time at which the drop occurs.

edit to my last post. we are only bringing 1 novice team. our really good novices are being entered jv.

 

so we have:

1 varsity

1 jv

1 2 person novice.

Remember the days when we didn't have to combine JV and Varsity divisions at every tournament. What ever happened to those days? Alas...
As of today there are 30+ teams in each division so there will for sure be two separate varsity and JV divisions.

As usual the entirety of WB will be there in some capacity. That would be me and Freda along with another varsity team. I don't know if our good JV is entered varsity, but we will also have 3 other JV teams tagging along, as well as a carload of novices.

can u post the team list for varsity and novice?
I'm sorry I didn't notice this earlier. I'll post Varsity and JV team lists when I get home. Novice is being run on someone else's computer so thats all I can do.
