Mac v. PC for debate...Which is better

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm a Mac!... I'm a 1.06 GHz iBook G4 with 768 Ram and 30GB, running 10.4.9. I'm user-friendly, great for multimedia applications, programming in darwin, and have spotlight so My user can access all of his files with just the click of a button...

VISTA is for posers

"Viva Macintosh!"

For debate, you're just typing. I suppose that Windows might have a ridiculously small (almost not worth mentioning) advantage in that the built-in mouse-touchpad thingy comes with the two-button mouse standard, which can sometimes simplify things. Realistically, though, all you need is Excel (or equivalent) for flowing and a word processor and Adobe Acrobat for pulling up evidence (if you do that kind of thing). There's no real difference between Macs and PCs in those programs.

is thread for debating about whether Mac or PC's are better overall, or for use in debate rounds?

Comparing Windows to Macintosh isn't even a fair comparison. Given the same hardware, OS X will outperform any version of Windows in just about any task. It's more efficient, more powerful, and less buggy. How much extra RAM does Vista suck up to make Aero look like Aqua? It's absolutely unacceptable.

The only problem is the price. It's hard to justifty just how much more expensive Macs are.

Of course, not all PCs are Windows. I'm playing around with Ubuntu Linux these days. It's pretty impressive. If you guys want to see some real Linux eye-candy, search for "XGL" on youtube.

Well, the thread title says "for debate." I took that at face value.

All you have to do is hit option + click or you can change your settings so that a tap on the pad is the equivalent to a right click on Macs.

Two words: two hands.

or you can change your settings so that a tap on the pad is the equivalent to a right click on Macs.

Three words: Sounds like work.

True, overall macs probably are better, performance-wise, but for debate the difference is negligible. Because of the minute convenience difference and considerable cost difference (if all you're doing is debate or other things which don't require good performance), windows is (I guess) a bit better. I don't like saying it, but it's the truth, probably.

I've found that all this mac/PC is better business comes down to which one you use more often.

I use PC/Windows more often, thus, I'm more comfortable with it, and believe it's better.

Some people use Macs more often, and thus, they'll be more used to it/believe it's better.

It's like the flow with laptop/paper debate - it all comes down to what works for you - there is no universal x compy is better for flowing - it's all in what works for the individual.

i've used windows/dos since i was four and decided never to use it again three days after buying my first mac some fourteen years later

p.s. windows vista is a joke. requires a gig of ram and a shit ton of hard drive space resulting in windows xp - some neat features + slightly better looking gui - lots of system resources (cpu/memory). while microsoft is constantly improving the way windows looks they are also constantly removing useful features and bulking the shit out of it, and with all that hard work still fall far short of almost every other modern operating system

p.p.s. it'll take you at most a week to switch operating systems. it took me like twenty minutes to figure out how to do everything i want.

p.p.p.s. buy the one with bigger tits

hi I'm a Mac. how am I going to pay my rent? Maybe I'll make one of those cool movies for my landlord, I'm sure he'd understand.

sell your current expensive Power Mac G5 you payed through the nose for, and get a mini mac! (assuming you already bought acessories mouse, etc.)

How do you do this??

just use ctrl+click, or just buy a two-click from lexington

Go into system preferences for keyboard/mouse. I have mine set so "two fingers on track pad" + click = right click.

Regardless of whether or not the Mac OS is better than windows, I err toward PCs because of the programs that aren't available on macs / are harder to find. If you want to play new games, you pretty much have to have a PC. While some game designers are conscientious of non-windows OSs, Mac users still can't play Guildwars. Controlling most of the market has its advantages.

If you don't.... then why do you care? You can web browse / use documents / whatever on a 10 year old computer. That pretty much leaves Macs for those who want to do video editing easier. Woo?

All the windows is better arguments are illigit, because you can easily install windows on the Mac. I have vista on my MacBook, and can enjoy the benefit of both OS X, and Windows for any programs the OS X side cannot run.

Macs are also beautiful, well built, have georgeos screens, and come with built in webcams. There is no reaon to go PC, because Macs get the best of both worlds.

In terms of the OS debate, OS X is far superior for debate. My warrants are as follows:

  • Do not crash during round, which would suck
  • No viruses, spyware right before the 2AC ;)
  • Built in PDF support for files, much faster and more robust. Handles large PDFs much better
  • iSight camera can record rounds
  • Much faster, no lag switching between docs during speech time

I agree that its pretty much preference, the one you use more will be the one you like more. That leaves me in the realm of pc's. For everyone complaining about windows using Linux is a real possibility. Complaining about all the viruses? Try to not use limewire for getting programs. Cut back on the porn while your at it too. I use mac's all the time at my school and I have to say I like pc's alot more. Why? Probably because it's what I was raised on so I'm more comfortable with it and have a better understanding of how things work.

Thats the exact reason why I like windows better. Also, I guess I like windows because I am already used to it. :)

Macs are certainly gorgeous and easy to use. If I was buying a computer for someone who didn't know a lot about computers, I would buy them a Mac. It won't crash as much, and the big icons are nice and soft looking. I also think that Mac laptops are all-around better performers than other laptops. Just better engineered, and the look is hard to beat.

That said, if I'm going to dump a lot of cash on a desktop, I'm picking something that will be easy to upgrade and keep competitive. I'm looking for something that can be a viable gaming rig for as long as I pick up more ram or a video card ever other year or so. I am unaware of a Mac option for this.

yea, I agree with the preference thing. I fail to see what programs are unavaibale on macs. I mean sure, they have some less programs, but you wont use that shit anyways, and usually an equivelant on the mac is just as good.

Debate wise, they are probably indistinct.

Spotlight is awesome for debate, but I hear vista has something thats the same.

Also both have a program to recover lost files (time machine or whatever) which will prevent you from losing all that work on a big file for some reason (something Ive seen before on both PCs and Macs).
