    Thursday File October 25th, 2012

This week's Thursday File features a brand new election scenario based on policy statements made in the last two days. If you need an Obama good scenario that is different, this file has it. This scenario is so new we aren't even disclosing what it is publicly. Overall the file has two new elections scenarios, uniqueness updates, and includes all of the cards from last week's file. Find out more about the file, the table of contents, and the authors below.

The first new scenario is Romney Good based on healthcare. So far we have not carried Romney Good, but the uniqueness seems to make these scenarios more viable now. The file includes many of the impact answers you will need to defend the healthcare act is bad.

The second new scenario is an Obama Good scenario based on some policy statements that happened in the last few days. This scenario is distinct from the two typical Russia and China scenarios commonly read and relies upon information released this week.

Finally, the file includes new uniqueness evidence and indicts to major polls people use, as well as all the cards from last week's enormous reset file.

This file was written by Ross and Stephanie Garrett. Ross Garrett is an assistant debate coach at Kent Denver, and has previously coached for New Trier, Mountain Brook, and Samford University. His students have won top speaker at Blake, won the Emory tournament, appeared in elimination rounds at the TOC, and have received TOC bids at tournaments around the country. Samford appeared in the octofinals of the NDT and was ranked in the top 25 poll throughout his tenure. Stephanie Garrett is the head debate coach at Kent Denver, her teams have appeared in the elimination rounds at Wake Forest this season.

    Thursday File 10-18-2012

This week's Thursday file was written by Dr. Ryan Galloway, it brings you a massive amount of new uniqueness evidence, a BRAND NEW elections impact scenario based on Syria, new links, and extensive 1AR blocks. Find out more about the file and author below.

This file has four distinct sections to prepare for politics debating throughout the semester:
First, it includes over 60 pages of uniqueness evidence. It answers the Gallup and Rasmussen polls, addresses the Libya issue, discusses the impact of all prior debates and the upcoming debate, and has state specific uniqueness.
Second, it includes a brand new election scenario based upon Syria. Syria is obviously a very volatile country that the next president will have to deal with, this scenario focuses on the differences between the candidates.
Third, it includes more than 40 pages of new link evidence to all of the most popular high school affirmatives.
Fourth, it includes a ready made 2AC block and 1AR blocks for all the arguments included in the file. This file will be round ready for the affirmative in its current condition.

Ryan Galloway is the director of Debate at Samford University, with a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia, he also coached for Augustana and Baylor. Samford has had NDT octofinalists and top 25 teams during his tenure. He has worked with multiple NDT first round bid teams, and was named third best judge of the decade by his peers. He has regularly judged the elimination rounds of the NDT, TOC, and NDCA championship, and was a first round bid debater himself as a debater for George Mason University.

Thursday File - September 20th (Greenhill)

This week's Thursday File updates the Obama Good elections DA. It includes extensive uniqueness work both ways from the last few days that takes into account the news of the week (Romney's 47% gaffe, Obama's surge in several swing states). In addition to general uniqueness, I cut cards on the race in some of the biggest swing states. Since most of you probably already know what impact scenario you are reading, I decided to focus more on the link debate and answering some common impact turns. The link turn shield includes a new card from Orski (a common 1NC link author) from this week. The impact turn cards are originally researched answers to impact turns that many teams have been running.

Aside from the elections debate, I included updated answers to many agenda DAs teams could run. As an added bonus, I included some new impact cards, including the best impact to warming (in terms of being high-quality and short) since Tickell, and some economy updates.

Good luck at Greenhill or wherever you are debating this weekend!

    Thursday File September 13, 2012

This week's Thursday File features a Romney Bad China Bashing DA, written by Ross and Stephanie Garrett There are multiple reasons that this scenario is advantageous find out more about the file, its table of contents, and the authors below.

There are a six reasons that China Bashing is one of the best elections scenarios in the context of the high school topic:
    1. Elections is the dominant political issue.
    2. Romney has very clearly made a policy pledge to label China a "currency manipulator" his first day in office, he doesn't need Congress for that promise.
    3. The impacts from changing the China label are short term.
    4. China Bashing lets you turn most of the AFF's best advantages like the economy.
    5. The link direction for Romney bad works very well. Announcing major spending on long term infrastructure projects that could rile fears of the debt isn't a great election strategy for Obama.
    6. Right now uniqueness seems to be tipping toward Obama winning now.

The file also include AFF answers to this scenario and uniqueness for both sides of the election debate.

Thursday File- Wake/Westminster 9/6/2012

Opening season Thursday File. This is in my opinion the best politics disad this weekend and the budget/sequestration debate will be one that continues for the rest of the semester. Continuing Resolution will be the only thing that passes before the elections and the multiplicity of different internal link stories makes it an amazing politics to have for this weekends tournaments.

    Thursday File March 8, 2012

This week's Thursday file updates THREE scenarios that have been published in recent weeks along with the full backfile for running these scenarios. All three relate to the economy and jobs putting them at the top of the agenda. Find out more about the file and author below.

The first scenario is corporate tax reform, Obama has begun to pivot his agenda to focus on corporate tax reform. This bill not only is a huge economic issue, but provides a lot of industry specific impacts that allow you to diversify.

The second scenario is Jackson-Vanik which while being an economic issues also provides you with huge US-Russia impacts. Especially with tensions in Syria and Iran, Russia is a central player in most world events today.

The final scenario is the mortgage bill which is a very important issue right now because of domestic election year politics.

This week's Thursday File was written by Jacob Lewis of Samford University. Jake is a senior at Samford University who appeared in outrounds at nearly every major tournament, was in the top 25 the entire season, and appeared in finals of the prestigious Pittsburgh University round robin. Jake has regularly instructed at the Samford Debate Institute and has assisted a variety of Alabama and Georgia high schools in the last four years.

    Thursday File 2-23-2012

Obama has finally laid out a plan for reforming the system by lowering the top rate and closing loop holes. This file prepares you debate both sides of that critical issue which has dominated the media cycle. This is one area you don't want to be behind in. This file also sets you up to debate the number one thumper every summer. Gas prices! As the price rises, Obama's political capital goes down. That is why it is critical for him to control the spin on the issue.

Buy early and often. Author proceeds will go directly to the National Association of Urban Debate Leagues' Vincent J. Binder Urban Debate Scholars Award. Your small contribution will help send debaters to camp this summer.

It's a rough week for the politics disadvantage. Updates include the payroll tax cut, mortgage bill, line-item veto and a start for an elections disadvantage.

The parameters of a payroll tax cut extension have been agreed upon, but if they don't manage to pass it tomorrow, you might still have a disadvantage on your hands if you can win a strong link. Some folks still seem worried it could be derailed at the last minute.

Continuing series include small updates to the mortgage bill, which is a tough battle but contains a good debate about its relationship to the economy.

As the election nears, agenda disadvantages will be difficult to win and you'll see many teams fall back on the elections disadvantage. I've included a "Romney Bad" scenario that relies on him merely attempting to overturn Obamacare.

    Thursday File February 9th, 2012

It is another election year and the twenty year old campaign slogan "It's all about the economy, stupid," pretty much sums up politics right now. This week's Thursday File brings you FOUR different economy related politics DAs. Find out more about the file, table of contents, and author below.

Obama began a major new push for a bill starting with the state of the union, for a new mortgage plan. This bill deals with the economy and a campaign appeal to voters. Payroll tax cuts is on its last legs either way and you should expect this DA to be the DA of the future, get a head start by working on it now. This DA probably has a much better internal link to the economy than payroll tax cuts.

Obama also pushed a line-item veto bill back in 2010, but with the new congressional session this idea has gotten new life. This DA reduces the deficit and would let you leverage all your spending type DAs and impacts, but without having to win a direct spending link to the AFF.

Payroll tax cuts is still is a big deal and this file updates both affirmative and negative cards for the most popular DA right now.

Russia recently got into the WTO, but the US has a law called Jackson-Vanik blocking certain trade with them in conflict with the WTO. Obama is pushing this issue hard and he is tying the trade aspect to his jobs agenda. This DA has the most diverse impacts of the bunch because of the foreign policy aspect.

Finally, this file contains a major section on economy updates and impacts to strengthen the core theme of this file.

Ross Garrett is an assistant coach for New Trier his teams bid at Blake and have cleared at St. Mark's, Michigan, Glennbrooks, OVI and many other tournaments this season. Thursday File January 5th, 2012

A new year has begun and a new Congressional session is about to begin. However, not much has changed his politics. Payroll tax cuts are still the hottest thing on capital hill. This week's Thursday File updates Payroll Tax for the new year, bring you a Jackson Vanik DA which is closely following current events around Russia and the WTO, and get the AFF ready for many unpredictable negative scenarios with a series of good thumpers. Learn more about the author and file below.

Payroll tax cuts is a very similar DA to the version being run before the holiday break, now the DA focuses on the full year extension. There is some very good evidence that Obama is leading the push right now. Although for the AFF many of the new negative cards may lend themselves to reading a Winners Win link turn.

Jackson Vanik is a US policy that conflicts with Russia's ascent to the WTO. The US needs to repeal this, but that move will be very controversial, since the WTO has just acted pressure is on the US now, and because it is a foreign policy issue President Obama will have to be a leader on it.

Ross Garrett is an assistant coach for New Trier his teams bid at Blake and have cleared at St. Mark's, Michigan, Glennbrooks, OVI and many other tournaments this season. Additionally as an assistant coach for Samford his teams have cleared at GSU, Kentucky, USC and Wake Forest, and were octofinalists at the NDT and have been ranked throughout the season in the top 25 coaches poll. He was an assistant debate coach at Mountain Brook High School and an instructor at the Spartan, Samford and Liberty Debate Institutes.. His Mountain Brook teams cleared at the TOC, took 3rd at NFL nationals, won the Barkley Forum at Emory, received top speaker at Blake, and bid at every major tournament.

    Thursday File December 8, 2011

This week’s Thursday File is following two of our previous DAs payroll tax and China. In addition since economy impacts have been a main stay on the negative this season this file attempts to help you improve your economy impact debating and file. You can find out more about the author and file below.

Payroll tax cuts are the hottest item in Washington and probably the biggest politics DA right now. This file keeps you up to date on that DA and includes many cards that assume the new GOP proposal to bundle Keystone with payroll tax. Last weekend at Ohio Valley the semi-final debate was won on this position and many of the arguments used in that debate have been updated through this week.

Additionally, economy impacts have been a mainstay of the negative this year. This file has an emphasis on that portion of negative politics debating and should bring you the cards to take your impact calculus work to the next level.

For China bashing this DA is probably on its last leg, but this file may allow you to continue reading it if you are really insistent.

    Thursday File December 1, 2011

This week's Thursday File allows the negative to read the most relevant DA of the week--payroll taxes. In addition it covers our continuing China scenario, and brings updates for the affirmative for Jackson-Vanek, unemployment, government shutdown and NDAA. This week's author is Lincoln Garrett a senior at Liberty University who is currently ranked in college's top 25. Find out more about the file and author below.

Obama's only focus for the last few months has been his jobs bill. Payroll tax cuts are a part of his overall plan and critical votes will be happening soon. This scenario should allow you to avoid thumpers and because the situation has changed so much since Thanksgiving teams must be updated to have any chance.

Lincoln Garrett is a senior and 4 year debater for Liberty University. He has been a lab leader for Capitol Debate Institute, and helped Mountain Brook and Bronx Science at the last two TOCs. He has appeared in elimination rounds at Harvard, Wake Forest, Kentucky, GSU and many other tournaments. He is a two time NDT qualifier as well.
