    NFL (NSDA) Thursday File

This weeks Thursday (or Saturday rather) file includes THREE disadvantages for NFL Nationals. In addition to updates to the GOP and Dems DA's for midterms, there is a brand new Highway Trust Fund DA that is perfect NFL. The Highway Trust Fund will be out of money by August and 700,000 people will be out of jobs. The Disad says that Congress will reach a bipartisan deal to keep infrastructure projects funded and that these projects are vital to competitiveness and economic growth. The plan would disrupt this bipartisan compromise because it is unpopular in Congress etc etc.

In the wake of Eric Cantor's surprising defeat in his Virginia primary, this weeks file also includes updates in the world of midterms.

Finally, the file includes answers to any possible agenda disadvantage you could possible debate this weekend. Enjoy!

This week's file was authored by Chris Carey, a sophomore debate at the University of Kansas. As a college debate, Chris has participated in the outrounds of CEDA, UMKC, and several other tournaments.

    Thursday File, 4/10/20104

This Thursday file includes a whole new scenario on the Middle East Peace Process as well as an Immigration Reform DA. In addition, it includes updates on patent reform, minimum wage, tpp, and nsa. As a bonus the file includes a Delay CP (which will solve for all the politics scenarios since most votes are coming up within the next week or so) as well as a DeDev impact turn frontline (since a lot of politics impact scenarios are the economy).

The file was made by Joe Leeson-Schatz, Director of Debate at Binghamton University

    Thursday file 3-13

It's a bit of a slow week in politics, but that won't stop cross-x from bringing you the best politics stuff out there. This weeks scenario is minimum wage hike, which is being pushed by Obama and fellow dems. It includes econ and poverty impacts, with a few extra turns case goodies. We also have updated the UQ for Iran sanctions, and CIR, as well as giving you a litany of aff answers.

This week's file was authored by Luke Hartman and Kyle Klucas , two debaters at k-state, who collectively have attended a number of national level tournaments, and assist in coaching local Kansas debate.

    Thursday File - NFLs

This is a new spin on the Immigration politics dis-ad. Tons of new link and internal link stories that allows you to maximize the current political environment to your advantage, specific to the Senators involved in the negotiations. This provides you with notes on the new link and internal link scenarios to give you the best explanation that puts you ahead of your opponents. Don't get stuck going for political capital arguments when Obama doesn't have any when it comes to immigration and is mired in controversy.

    Thursday File - 10/31

This week's Thursday file is all treats, no tricks. It updates the immigration reform disad that has been developing over the past few weeks, including plenty of cards from the past couple days that will help you scare your opponents into submission. Also included are affirmative answers to immigration, the Iran DA, and some other disads that have been creeping their way into the college debate circuit like the TPA, Farm Bill, and the 2014 midterms DAs. As an added bonus, I have included a new uniqueness card for the China SOI DA, as well as some random impact updates I have found in the last few weeks. Think of this as a king size candy bar at a fun size price. Happy Halloween, all! Hope to see you in Ann Arbor this weekend.

I debated for four years at Groves High School in Beverly Hills, MI. During my senior year I debated almost exclusively on the national circuit, reaching elimination rounds at East Grand Rapids, New Trier, and Harvard. I have debated for four years at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, clearing at regional and national tournaments and during the 2011-12 season qualifying for the NDT. As a coach for Seaholm High School my debaters have reached elimination rounds at local and national tournaments.

    Thursday File - 12/5

This week's Thursday file contains two viable scenarios - the farm bill and Iran sanctions.

Farm bill - the existing farm bill will expire at the end of the calendar year. If a new bill doesn't get passed by then food prices will spike and we get to see our own version of The Hunger Games. Seriously though, it would be bad for food prices and the file includes extensive evidence backing that up.

Iran sanctions - While a preliminary deal may have been reached, Congress wants to pass a package of sanctions that will be triggered if Iran reneges on the deal. Your argument is that such a package would signal that our negotiations were in bad faith and collapse the deal, enabling Iran prolif.

The file also includes affirmative answers to these scenarios and other DAs like immigration reform and ENDA,

Good luck this weekend and may the odds be ever in your favor,
    BGM

I debated for four years at Groves High School in Beverly Hills, MI. During my senior year I debated almost exclusively on the national circuit, reaching elimination rounds at East Grand Rapids, New Trier, and Harvard. I have debated for four years at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, clearing at regional and national tournaments and during the 2011-12 season qualifying for the NDT. As a coach for Seaholm High School my debaters have reached elimination rounds at local and national tournaments.

    Thurday File NFL Nationals 6-13-2011

This is a free TF for NFL Nats. This file was put together to give you a few tools to use at your disposal in crafting a scenario. Recommendation would be to use this file to construct a Debt limit scenario. Good uniqueness cards from Today about how bipartisanship is critical to reaching a deal. reach into your files for internals and impacts and you are good to go. Keep in mind this file in NOT completely comprehensive, as since there was a mix up in TF authors, I decided to send something out to you all so that you would not be empty handed. There is one AFF card on Free Trade Agreements, that I would let a round come down to on a straight turn debate. Sometimes one is all you need. Enjoy and best of luck to everyone.

    Thursday File 11/14

Immigration is nearly dead, and is probably dead for the foreseeable future so I have created 2 possible replacements. First is the Employment Non-discrimination Act or ENDA. This is a bipartisanship da, not a political captial. ENDA is key to stop employment discrimination against those who identify as LGBT. Bipart is key to get the bill to the floor where the evidence is rather conclusive that there is a majority who will vote for the bill. The second DA is an Iran sanctions political capital da. The Obama administration is working on a deal for Iran to stop is nuclear weapons program. There is good reason to think this deal will be done by the end of the month. Both Democrats and Republicans are against providing any significant concessions to Iran, thus they are working on legislation to block Obama from lifting any sanctions and they plan to add more. So in the status quo they can't get sanctions passed, but Obama needs is political capital prevent passage. Plan takes Obama's capital away, sanctions are passed and no Iran deal. I have included the Immigration DA in case you do not want to give up on it. Finally, the file provides many uniqueness answers regarding Obama's ability to influence, or Congress getting anything done.

This week's author proceeds go directly to the Vince Binder scholarship at the NAUDL. That's entirely what you get. Might as well purchase twice just to make sure you got it.

As a bonus, here are over 400 pages of politics cards. You'll lose money if you don't buy it.

This week's file zeros in directly on Cross-x.com's continuing scenario: Comprehensive Immigration Reform. State of the Union updates are included, as well as some fresh links, political capital theory and a dust-up of the internal links.

This file was written by Chris Crowe, with massive contributions from Gabe Murillo, Josh Gonzalez, Bria Frame and past authors Colin Roark and Stephanie Garrett. Roughly one million years of debate experience, give or take a few. Please support their efforts and the NAUDL.

Thursday File 9/26 - Debt Ceiling + CIR

This week’s Thursday file includes an update to the debt ceiling disadvantage along with a small update to immigration reform. The debt ceiling DA has never been better – with the deadline getting closer, the GOP is feeling more pressured than ever to cave in to Obama’s demand for a “clean†deal. But, Obama needs PC to stave off GOP demand (a good angle to deal with most people’s thumpers/no pass args). The plan means Obama loses is leverage and has to give in to GOP hostage taking, causing further escalation of demands and the collapse of negotiations

Also included is a small update for CIR – the story is surprisingly decent for this DA. Despite other fiscal fights and syria, congress will have just enough time to address immigration before elections. The plan disrupts the key sequencing of the agenda since any new agenda items are not calculated within the current congressional calendar.

Also included is “no pass†and impact d for debt ceiling, “no pass†cards for immigration, and some thumpers to deal with anything else.

    Thursday File 2-13-14

This week's Thursday File brings you everything you could want for high school's biggest debate weekend. It includes 100% new evidence this week and updates for Iran, Immigration and TPA. In accordance with our tradition this week's file is authored by a group seeking to raise money for a debate charity the Indianapolis Urban Debate League.

Iran sanctions is the headliner in this file. The reason this scenario has staying power is because the Israel lobby has a lot of clout. It still makes sense in relation to the topic because Iran is very isolated from most 1AC impacts, and has very powerful interactions with multilateralism advantages.

Immigration reform has a less clear road ahead of it, but is still a major agenda item along with TPA. Even if you don't read these as the negative the extensive 2AC and 1AR blocks that are round ready will make sure that you are prepared to deal with these scenarios.

This week's file was authored by members of the University of Indiana debate team. The team has made resurgence in policy debate since its 2009 're-forming'. It is closely associated with the University's excellent School of Public and Environmental Affairs and its members are nationally competitive.

    Thursday File 11-21-2013

This week's file focuses on Iran Sanctions. Right now, Obama is involved in meetings in Geneva with the P5+1. They're making progress, but can only come to an international agreement on Iran IF congress doesn't unilaterally pass the Iran legislation that is in the house. So, it's a little different spin to your usual political capital causes X legislation to pass This nuance should help you with teams who don't understand the DA, it is also very unique because it requires stopping legislation which is much more feasible in the current political landscape than other DAs. The impacts are huge from Iran, and should be external to most Latin America affirmatives.

We have included in the file AFF answers to Iran, Immigration, SNAP, and ENDA. Politics are in flux right now and you need to be prepared to answer a wide variety of positions. Neg updates are also included for immigration and ENDA. The backfile for those disads are in this weeks TF so you can run ANY of the three DAs mentioned. This file should provide you all the flexibility to finish your semester strong.

This file was written by Ross and Stephanie Garrett. Ross Garrett is an assistant debate coach at Kent Denver, and has previously coached for New Trier, Mountain Brook, and Samford University. His students have won top speaker at Blake, won the Emory tournament, appeared in elimination rounds at the TOC, and have received TOC bids at tournaments around the country. Samford appeared in the octofinals of the NDT and was ranked in the top 25 poll throughout his tenure. Stephanie Garrett is the head debate coach at Kent Denver, her teams have appeared in the elimination rounds at Wake Forest, Iowa Caucus, Alta and finals of JV Glenbrooks this season, and are the Colorado state champions.

    Thursday File 10-17-2013

After a CRAZY week in politics, there are some new big things going on. I might be a little tired after staying up to catch up, so bear with me…
Immigration is back, and it’s not bad. There are some will pass cards, mostly predicated on Obama’s overwhelming victory in the shut-down fight. I went ahead and included a robust defense of the impacts to immigration reform as well as the updated uq since Obama’s Tuesday speech on Univision where he said he would push immigration reform first after the government closed.
I also wrote an Iran disad--Congress is rallying to increase sanctions on Iran now right after the government opens up—Obama will need political capital to decrease sanctions on Iran and prevent Iranian nuclear proliferation.
I put in answers to any new debt ceiling disad is months away, and looks weak after the Republicans capitulated this time. There is also a smattering of cards suggesting that the debt ceiling win might increase chances of a Democratic House take-over in 2014, so I included a couple of answers.

Also, all my profits from this week’s Thursday File will go toward a minority scholarship in the College of Arts & Sciences at Samford University.

Ryan Galloway is the director of Debate at Samford University, with a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia, he also coached for Augustana and Baylor. Samford has had NDT octofinalists and top 25 teams during his tenure. He has worked with multiple NDT first round bid teams, and was named third best judge of the decade by his peers. He has regularly judged the elimination rounds of the NDT, TOC, and NDCA championship, and was a first round bid debater himself as a debater for George Mason University.

    Thursday File 10-22 - Immigration

This week’s Thursday File brings you an updated version of the immigration disadvantage. Following the shutdown/debt ceiling debate, Obama emerged the winner and has the upper hand moving forward on immigration reform. However, he needs to maintain his political capital to shepherd a deal in the House that will garner Republican support. The uniqueness evidence is even better than last weeks. Also included are a wide variety of aff responses including no pass cards, a2 obama’s pc, and reasons the bill will inevitably be delayed but pass later. Additionally, there are some general thumpers/gridlock cards to deal with any other potential DA’s you might encounter. Happy debating

    Debt Ceiling Politics Disad

My name is Sara Kirsch and I am currently the director of debate at Traverse City Central High School. I was nationally competitive in high school, where I received 6 bids to the Tournament of Champions. In college, I debated briefly at Emory and then Michigan State University. I have coached at Wylie E. Groves, Brother Rice, Lexington, and now Traverse City Central High School. I have also instructed at the SDI and MNDI.

I chose the Debt Ceiling for a number of reasons.

First, the impacts are very strong. Failure to raise the debt ceiling would effect every single sector of the economy. You don't have to read generic "US key to Econ" cards to access the global economy, there are pretty good cards that hitting the debt ceiling would effect the global economy. Also, it messes up a lot of affirmatives on this topic, because most advantages are predicated off of economic instability.

Second, if the US doesn't raise the debt ceiling, it means Congress can't spend any more money, AND has to make immediate spending cuts. This would be bad because some military spending and entitlement programs would get cut. Also, this is an awesome turns the case argument, because even if fiat means the plan passes immediately, the disad means the plan won't get funded immediately. I would make this as a logically turns case argument every time you read it.

Third, there is a decent answer to Syria. First, is that Syria = bipartisanship. The GOP WANTS Obama to strike Syria, and Democrats don't want to make Obama look bad, so they will likely vote to authorize the strike. This means Syria won't cost political capital because there will not be a fight in Congress about it. Second, even if the aff wins Syria is the top of the docket, the negative can win at least initially, Syria will increase Obama's capital enough to finish debt ceiling negotiations, and get it passed.

    Good luck!
    - Sara

    Thursday File 4-25-2013

This week, I wanted to do three things with the Thursday file.

#1: Update the file to account for the effect the Boston bombings had on immigration reform. You'll find a wealth of evidence post the bombing on both sides of the uniqueness debate. If your opponent's evidence doesn't assume the backlash against the bill caused by the bombings, you'll be in good shape. In addition, a debate about whether or not immigration reform solves or causes terrorism has popped up, and you have evidence on both sides of that controversy.
#2: Provide you with links versus the major cases you'll encounter this weekend. The file is updated to include links against: the Bering Strait, DOD Cases, FRB cases, Homeland Security actions, the Mayport base, port security, TSA, and a host of new cards on both sides of the Winners Win debate. I tried to ask myself what I would want going into the TOC, and links to popular cases was top of my list.
#3: Strong affirmative answers. I've put in a 2ac front-line with extensions for the major arguments. Immigration reform was the only version of politics I saw run at NDCA, so being deep on your affirmative blocks is critical to success.

Good luck this weekend, and if you have any questions, feel free to email me at rwlcgalloway@gmail.com.

    Thursday File 12-12

This week's Thursday File was a little delayed because the budget deal was still be debating and the best scenario was unknown for much of the day. In the end given the current state of the budget deal the best scenario for this weekend was Iran sanctions. This week's file updates the scenario.

Iran contains a big external impact to most AFFs. Because Obama is trying to prevent legislation it is much more realistic that he is able to do this in the current political climate. The file is primarily update with all the 1NC and 2NC uniqueness cards from today, and the backfile necessary to run the DA.

This week's author is Francisco Becosme, he debated at Wake Forest University where he appeared in the octofinals of Harvard, Texas, and GSU, and was invited to participate in the prestigious Pittsburgh Round Robin. Currently, he is a capitol hill staffer who actually works in this area every day. He has in the past helped the Bronx Science team and has coached numerous successful high school teams.

    Thursday File 1-24

After looking at this week’s scenarios, I decided to write a comprehensive immigration reform file. I feel comprehensive immigration reform is the best scenario for three reasons:
It has the best uniqueness cards: the NEG should be well ahead on the will pass now debate.
The impacts are enormous: no troubles with turn the case arguments with immigration reform, especially because you can access both the skilled and unskilled worker debate.
There is some nuance on major politics arguments: there are tricks to answer both the “Obama isn’t using capital anymore†argument and the thumpers debate.

My goal is to produce a file that would provide the foundation for your
impact and internal link work for the rest of the semester. Immigration reform isn’t likely to pass quickly, which gives you some time to flesh out your internal link and impact arguments. For the shell, I went with the combo package of economic and military leadership, figuring you could access the internal links to any AFF with that package. However, I also included numerous modules you could adapt to be your primary impact scenario that could also turn many AFF’s. Look to US-India relations, US-Latin America relations, and science diplomacy for impacts you could substitute in the shell and then explode in the block.
For the high school topic, don’t forget the trick that skilled workers are needed for infrastructure projects. They can fund the proposal all they want, if they don’t have workers on the ground, the proposal can’t be built, short-circuiting their solvency. I also included some NEG updates for debt ceiling and the Hagel nomination.
The AFF work covers immigration reform, gun control, the debt ceiling, and the Hagel nomination. For the AFF, I would try and make the NEG skirt the narrow divide between the thumpers and their link…if the fights on gun control and the debt ceiling aren’t sufficient to trigger the link, the plan is probably not enough either.
Good luck at the Barkley Forum or wherever this weekend’s travels take you. It’s a big week for politics, but it should be a fun one. If you have any questions about the file, feel free to shoot me an email at rwlcgalloway@gmail.com

    Thursday File 1-30

Politics for this week is a bit murky, mostly from a STOU that focused on executive orders rather than legislation. This week's file includes Trade Promotion Authority as the primary DA. TPA is still possible, but Obama didn't do himself any favors by barely mentioning fast track in his SOTU speech, thus the uniqueness is not as strong as it was last week. While strong arguments against passage of TPA, especially since Harry Ried came out against the legislation yesterday.

Immigration remains a strong option and there is momentum to pass. Although Obama didn't provide much support in the STOU address,, the House Republicans realize that passing some kind of immigration reform may be necessary for midterm elections. You should look out as to what happens later today regarding the House Republican's announcement regarding their immigration objectives. This may have an impact on the DA's uniqueness.

Iran is possible, but the uniqueness evidence may be too good. There doesn't seem to be much hope for a vote to happen.

Other possibilities including Debt Ceiling and Minimum wage are included, but do not seem to be viable possibilities for this week.

This file was completed by Donny Peters, Assistant Director of Forensics at California State University-Fullerton. Donny has coached successful CEDA/NDT teams at the novice, JV and Open levels. He has over 15 years of experience in the activity.
