It's a rough week for the politics disadvantage. Updates include the payroll tax cut, mortgage bill, line-item veto and a start for an elections disadvantage.
The parameters of a payroll tax cut extension have been agreed upon, but if they don't manage to pass it tomorrow, you might still have a disadvantage on your hands if you can win a strong link. Some folks still seem worried it could be derailed at the last minute.
Continuing series include small updates to the mortgage bill, which is a tough battle but contains a good debate about its relationship to the economy.
As the election nears, agenda disadvantages will be difficult to win and you'll see many teams fall back on the elections disadvantage. I've included a "Romney Bad" scenario that relies on him merely attempting to overturn Obamacare.
Chris Crowe is a debate coach for the University of Texas at San Antonio and Westwood High School. He has qualified multiple high school teams to the Tournament of Champions and top 20 finishes at NFL Nationals. His college debaters have cleared at every major national tournament, including CEDA Nationals and the NDT. Chris is a highly preferred critic, judging the final round of CEDA and the NDT the past two years. Chris was the 2006 CEDA Debater of the Year.

It is another election year and the twenty year old campaign slogan "It's all about the economy, stupid," pretty much sums up politics right now. This week's Thursday File brings you FOUR different economy related politics DAs. Find out more about the file, table of contents, and author below.
http://www.cross-x.c...ruary-9th-2012/
Obama began a major new push for a bill starting with the state of the union, for a new mortgage plan. This bill deals with the economy and a campaign appeal to voters. Payroll tax cuts is on its last legs either way and you should expect this DA to be the DA of the future, get a head start by working on it now. This DA probably has a much better internal link to the economy than payroll tax cuts.
Obama also pushed a line-item veto bill back in 2010, but with the new congressional session this idea has gotten new life. This DA reduces the deficit and would let you leverage all your spending type DAs and impacts, but without having to win a direct spending link to the AFF.
Payroll tax cuts is still is a big deal and this file updates both affirmative and negative cards for the most popular DA right now.
Russia recently got into the WTO, but the US has a law called Jackson-Vanik blocking certain trade with them in conflict with the WTO. Obama is pushing this issue hard and he is tying the trade aspect to his jobs agenda. This DA has the most diverse impacts of the bunch because of the foreign policy aspect.
Finally, this file contains a major section on economy updates and impacts to strengthen the core theme of this file.
Ross Garrett is an assistant coach for New Trier his teams bid at Blake and have cleared at St. Mark's, Michigan, Glennbrooks, OVI and many other tournaments this season. Additionally as an assistant coach for Samford his teams have cleared at GSU, Kentucky, USC and Wake Forest, and were octofinalists at the NDT and have been ranked throughout the season in the top 25 coaches poll. He was an assistant debate coach at Mountain Brook High School and an instructor at the Spartan, Samford and Liberty Debate Institutes.. His Mountain Brook teams cleared at the TOC, took 3rd at NFL nationals, won the Barkley Forum at Emory, received top speaker at Blake, and bid at every major tournament.

This file is a small update for the payroll tax DA, at a discounted price. Payroll taxes must be passed by February 29th, so they are the main agenda item, additionally this week a conference committee began meeting to resolve issues. This file brings you updated uniqueness on both sides of the debate.
