New Scott Phillips 12-18 TF
Dec 18, 2008 - 9:16 AM - by kerpen
This TF contains updates to the last few disads that have been turned out- mainly healthcare and stimulus.

Healthcare- Obama recently put Dachle in charge of spear heading his healthcare agenda and this has made it seem like a top priority for the new prez. There is surprisingly good uniqueness evidence that Obama/Daschle will push reform despite the economy and that they will be able to overcome issues that have hampered healthcare in the past.

Stimulus- the size keeps getting bigger as the economic outlooks grows darker- some now put the estimated stimulus at 1 trillion dollars, and it looks like even at that amount it would still be able to pass. This is where politics gets pretty tricky as Obama has made it pretty clear that he plans to include energy infrastructure in the stimulus- SO while there are generic link cards in here you will be well served by NOT READING THEM and instead reading specific link cards so you can differentiate between the stuff Obama will do now and the plan (things he is going to do now are things like update the grid/promote efficiency, though he has been very vague it is unlikely he is talking about RPS)

New Dec 11 TF -- Health Care Reform
Dec 11, 2008 - 9:23 AM - by kerpen
This week's Thursday File features an all-new disad: health care reform. The story goes like this: recently, the Chairmanship of the House Energy & Commerce Committee changed hands - Henry Waxman beat out longtime chair John Dingell. While there was a pretty bitter fight at the time, Waxman and Dingell are mending the fences and will cooperate to ensure that their critical committee passes health care reform (along with the rest of Congress). New action on energy would poison the well between Waxman and Dingell - many saw the key difference between the two as Waxman's support of strong action on climate, and Dingell's strong opposition. A Waxman-Dingell split prevents health care reform, which is key to the economy.
While the main strength of this disad is that it's isolated from nearly all link offense and most Obama-related arguments, I've also included great political capital and bipart links, so that you can best tailor the link to the aff you're debating.
Lastly, this file includes a lot of impact work on a disad that will likely be around the rest of the year - this is a great chance to get ahead of the curve with a lot of very recent health care impact ev.

Good luck at Dowling, Alta, or... [Read More]
